With any addictive substance our government allows to be sold, there is some attempt to curb your consumption. For example, a bar is required to cut you off after too many drinks, and liquor stores aren't supposed to sell to people who are already drunk. Why are casinos not given any mandate to do the same for problem gamblers? They prey on people like her. I doubt she'll win but at the same time, I hope she gets a point across.

For anyone who hasn't been following this story, she signed a form that barred her from entering any of the casinos - in return, they were suppose to throw her out if she showed up. She managed to continue to get in, lost a ton of money and now thinks it's the casinos fault for not throwing her out.

She is number 653 on my list of people I would like to slap.

Ah, so the token thing they do have in place to attempt to curb this stuff, they're not even doing more than paying lipservice to. Will they honour those lists and attempt to enforce them if someone doesn't sue? What would be their incentive to lose money aside from losing money?

A problem gambler may not be quite as obvious as someone who is drunk.

Yeah, it makes a lot of sense, doesn't it? She got the casino to agree to ban her, which supposely they did (within reasonable possibility), she manages to get in anyway, deceitfully and then sues!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Its an addiction with zero reward.

And sometimes it's NOT an addiction, also with zero reward.

It's just entertainment. Some people like to spend their money on tv, or going to movies, or going to professional sports.
Others like to spend their entertainment money on casinos.

It's just entertainment for many people. Just like alcohol is 'just' social lubricant for many.

A problem gambler may not be quite as obvious as someone who is drunk.

unless they've gone to the trouble of labeling and identifying themselves to the casino as such. lol.

Some spend on booze, cocaine, methamphetamine, opiates....

Entertainment, right?

When "normal enetertainment" starts spitting ozone, offers me free caffeine and booze, free food, free parking, and starts emitting repetative resonance altering tones that throw my mind into theta waves like a 3 year old child it's time to run for the hills.

I have no doubt that for some it's highly addictive. And when someone becomes an addict, they need to do 3 things.

1) Admit they have a problem
2) Seek professional help
3) Work really really really hard at never participating ever again in whatever it was they were addicted to.

It's very hard to break an addiction, but people who continue to blame others are never going to get better.

The reason she is suing is because at no time did they tell her that, even though she was banned, they would still let her in to gamble but would not allow her to collect any winnings.

That's the reason she's suing; the whole 'self-banning' thing is a complete farce and sham, which is only done so the casino can pretend to be doing something.

Yeah, I have a hard time believing that the casino's were dumb enough to try this. You would think their lawyers would have advised against it - or maybe there's something in the small print that say's there is no guarantee (?)

Smoking. And I work with several people who used to smoke but they all made a pact and quit two years ago this January and have. I also know someone who quit drinking 20 years ago - he still attends AA, and I know the temptations are always there but he has a son and that became his priority in life.

There are millions of people who manage to beat their addictions and I doubt it was a cake walk for any of them.

So are all the dozens of people employed by the casino supposed to recognize the person?

So are all the dozens of people employed by the casino supposed to recognize the person?

Because the person who is self-banned has their picture taken, added to the list of people who are banned, and the list and pictures are supposed to be reviewed by the employees before every shift. According to the casino officials interviewed on CBC, that is.

And, if this is the same woman I heard about, the doormen recognized her, and called her by name as they let her in.

I don't personally feel she has a point, Karrie. She went to the casino obviously in an attempt to get rich. It didn't work, so now she wants her money back. If she were to win maybe myself and thousands of others will whine they want theirs back. I imagine in her gambling career she had the occasional win. Did she go up to the front desk and give the casino their money back? The woman is an idiot. Don't get me wrong I sympathize with her addiction, but I don't sympathize with her acting like an idiot.

holy smokes. I think that's funny.

can you imagine the backlash if she actually won???

Las Vegas would be bankcrupt in days. Casinos would have to shut down..

because she'd set a precedent and everyone would then begin to sue casinos for their thousands upon thousands they've lost.

yikes.
