So our soldiers are safe now? lol

Burning Muslim holy book 'no different than burning a Bible': defence minister

It's a lot different, burning a bible won't get you killed! Bibles get burned around the world regularly. No one notices. Not only does no one notice burning of bibles, they don't notice burning of entire churches, and christians!

Don't get me wrong, I think the burning of the Koran idea is stupid. But let's keep things in perspective here.

This preacher is an idiot, he's going to be a very unpopular person in the US if one of their soldiers die because of him riling up the crazies.

A few Americans burning a Qu'ran will play into the hands of demonizing anti-US propaganda in the same way that a few Muslims burning an American flag plays into the hands of demonizing anti-Islam propaganda.

Reasonable people on both sides will be able to see through it. Unfortunately reasonable people who can see through demonizing propaganda are a minority.

Its possible a few more Muslims may be convinced to sign up to fight against the infidels as a result. I doubt this event or the protests against building a Muslim community center in New York will have as big an impact as when the US led the Iraq invasion without just cause (no WMDs or links to 9/11) or when foreign infidel soldiers massacre innocent civilians, or when Israel commits yet another war crime, not to mention the ongoing Israeli crime against humanity suffered by millions of Palestinians, or all the dictators the US and Western powers have imposed on millions of Muslims and Arabs over the years.

A Qu'ran burning party is relatively small potatoes in the overall scheme of things, but it more or less confirms what many Muslims believe about the US. Which is why its important for Western leaders to go on record condemning this action.

I was going to post this yesterday, but figured people would dub me as attacking the US again or somehow defending extremist muslims.

It's a stupid idea though.... ignorance only fuels more ignorance.... hatred spawns more hatred.

And book burnings? WTF is this, Nazi Germany?

I never got religious groups who gather their moron followers to burn a bunch of books.... burn the Qur'an, burn Harry Potter, whatever........ do they even realize that they'll just manufacture more?

Regardless if the Extremists are in the right or wrong for getting PO'd and retaliate for their holy books being burned...... this idiot should know what will happen if they go ahead with this.

Hell, just look at what happened with one cartoon...... just wait and see what will happen when these wing nuts see this really happening....

In the reports I read, just hearing about this possibly happening already gained a bunch of protests, flag burnings and rocks being pelted at NATO troops in Afghanistan..... good thing our troops are going to be hauled out of there by years end..... at least they damn well better be hauled out.

There's no point continuing to fight for our ally down south when they continually egg on the conflict and make things worse, thus making us remain there longer and longer.

Maybe if they were left all by themselves over there and have nobody else to take the brunt of the aggression towards them, they might start to rethink what they're doing.

Well said!
Personally, I consider anyone who takes the Torah, Bhagavad Gita. Christian Bible, or the Qur'an literally a tin hat! However, this act of intolerance in a society that preaches "Freedom of Conscience" smacks of Kristallnacht! This idiocy simply plays into the hands of extremists.

Re: Burning the Quran Places Canadian Soldiers at Risk

While I think the idea is a bad one, I can understand the frustration of some people.
I think burning books is a sign of the darker side of people, the same as destroying
cultural symbols of the others. Let me give you a few examples. Born Agains
Christians burned rock and roll records in the fifties, they burned Beatle material at
one time as well. The wonderful Islamic Taliban, or at least they profess to be, took
it upon themselves to destroy artistic statues dating back more than twelve hundred
years, for cultural and religious reasons, during their brief stint in power. They
actually destroyed a nation and sent it back to the dark ages. Then there was the
extreme right wing, Nazi Movement, the National Socialists. They destroyed all things Jewish and we soon learned where that would lead. Oh and for some who
think the Nazis were left wing, not so, they were in fact extreme right wing forces.
Now to the preacher. He is capitalizing on the frustration and anger of people.
We are in a struggle with the Muslim world there is no doubt about that, but the
west is fighting this war with a self imposed one hand behind its back much like
the North fought the South in the American Civil War. We should either take it on
the chin and have the embolden fanatics come over here, or get down to the nasty
business of kicking the hell out of them with much more powerful weapons of
serious destruction over there.
This idea of burning someones Holy Book is a meaningless jesture though and I
do not approve. Yes if needed kill them, they kill us, until everyone is tired of the
bloodshed, eventually it comes to an end, we learned that in Northern Ireland.

Sounds like the Preacher has been turned down on his application for a permit
by the Gainesville Fire Department to have an open fire....so the bonfire thing is
out.

He might have to use a wood-burning appliance of some type.

I agreed with most of what you said except the part I quoted. The US government nor the military is responsible for this loon threatening to burn the Quran, to suggest we abandon our allies due to some nutbar is a little premature.

I wonder why the media gave this bigoted bastard the publicity he so desperately wants. Thirty members in his congregation? The sleezy clown must have been living on food stamps. Without the media circus it would probably not even have made the local papers.

Qur'an burning will legitimize the holy war for the terrorist on American soil and according to the CIA there are a lot of sleeper cells in USA.

Taking the fight against the Americans on their soil will result in the Americans visiting all kinds of retribution on those groups... It's only a matter of time before the US gets tired of having their Constitution used against them before a guerrilla-style war is played-out in a Muslim nation.

That's generally the way it works.. In order to be "inclusive and tolerant", it is necessary to deny rights to one group and extend them to another (oppressed) group.

Quaint, ain't it?

This is not about the mosque in NY... It has much to do with the clash between cultural norms/expectations and the laws and traditions in a nation.

That preacher is one serious nut job who should be heavily medicated. This is from Der Spiegel.

US fundamentalist pastor Terry Jones, who wants to burn copies of the Koran on Sept. 11, ran a church in the western German city of Cologne until last year when members of the congregation expelled him. Former members have spoken of his hate-filled sermons and insistence on "blind obedience."Former church members are still undergoing therapy as a result of "spiritual abuse," Schäfer said. According to Schäfer, Jones urged church members to beat their children with a rod and also taught "a distinctive demonology" and conducted brainwashing.

"Terry Jones appears to have a delusional personality," speculates Schäfer. When he came to Germany in the 1980s, Jones apparently considered Cologne "a city of Hell that was founded by Nero's mother," while he thought Germany was "a key country for the supposed Christian revival of Europe," Schäfer says.
