NATO Kills 10 Afghan Election Workers, Wounds Candidate
By Jason Ditz
September 2, 2010
NATO officials today were bragging about a “precision air strike” against a vehicle traveling on “a series of remote roads in Rostaq district” and assured that “no civilians were present” at the time of the attack.
No civilians, it turns out, except for the ones in the car, as Takhar provincial officials quickly confirmed that the vehicle’s passengers were all election campaigners preparing for this month’s parliamentary election (external - login to view). 10 were killed and two others, including a candidate for parliament, were wounded.
District governor Malim Hussain chastized NATO for the attack, saying the convoy of election workers was a ridiculous target and that NATO ought to realize that “a Taliban commander does not travel in a 100-vehicle convoy.”
NATO has promised to “investigate” the attack but was very clear in the first place about the strike being deliberate, and believing that the target was some sort of Taliban commander. The fact that the intelligence was wrong will likely be little consolation for the victims, particularly as NATO strikes seem to be escalating (external - login to view) and killing an increasing number of innocent civilians.
Last weekend a group of militants killed five campaign workers and the world reacted with shock. One must wonder today, when NATO killed twice as many, if it will be shrugged off as just another of many “accidents” in the nine year war.
Just a few attrocities your heros did in the last few days JBeee....

The UN reported on Monday that in the first six months of 2010, the number of civilian deaths and injuries rose 31%, with the majority (76%) caused by insurgents. Suicide attacks and IEDs against the military killed most of these civilians, who were innocent bystanders.
Insurgents are also increasingly turning to assassinations and intentionally targeting the local population, particularly in southern Afghanistan. They may not be as deadly in terms of number of casualties caused but, in many ways, they are equally harmful to humanitarian and strategic interests in Afghanistan.
Insurgent assassinations and kidnapping skyrocketed across Afghanistan in the first part of 2010, from just over three per week in the first half of 2009, to an average of 18 civilians assassinated per week in May and June 2010, according to the UN. Southern Afghanistan has been the most affected by these threats, as US and Nato promises of more troops and operations triggered greater attacks and intimidation by insurgent forces.
I wouldn't call that particular piece necessarily fear or hate mongering as much as it is extremely paranoid.
Have you ever given much thought to the notion, that we may still be harbouring that extremely strong urge to defend and protect?
