CBC News - Nfld. & Labrador - Boy, 8, accused of killing more pets

A central Newfoundland man says an eight-year-old boy, who admitted last month to RCMP that he beat a neighbour's dog to death with a barbeque fork, has killed more animals.
Corey Hodder, of Stoneville, found several of the chickens and ducks he keeps as family pets bludgeoned to death Tuesday.

"They got in my shed and there were shovels, a snow shovel, prongs, rakes, a sledgehammer and a level. Everything that was in my shed that they could get their hands on to throw at the birds — that's what they done," Hodder told CBC News Wednesday.

At least six birds were killed and five others were so badly injured that they can't walk.

Hodder notified the RCMP, and he said police interviewed the same eight-year-old boy who killed another Stoneville resident's dog last month.

The 12-pound Pomeranian was found beaten to death on June 4 but no charges were laid. RCMP and Child, Youth and Family Services were addressing the incident because of the boy's age.

After the latest animal killing, police again talked to the boy.

"[Police] went in and were talking to this boy for about an hour, and at the last of it, he admitted he done it," Hodder said.

Bonnie Harris of the Gander SPCA has also been notified about the latest incident. She was also involved when the dog was killed, which she called the most disturbing case of animal cruelty she had ever seen.

"What's going to happen next? Not just for the SPCA, but for the community itself. What's next?" she asked.

Harris said some of the birds had to be put down because they were too injured to recover.
The RCMP said the investigation into the bird killings is continuing.

Sounds like someone should give him a good beating so he knows what it's like.

I noticed the comments for the report were closed.... I imagine I wasn't the only one who thought so.

Yup. That's the answer to everything. If it doesn't behave the way we want, beat it. Geee, let's reinforce the behavior in the kid by showing him we do it, too.

Not to defend the kid, but he's a bit young, so it would be difficult to to give any real punishment and expect a positive result. Wait until he hits 16, and then slap him with a $10,000 fine. ;)

yeah... let's wait and look at punishment. We'll rehabilitate viscious dogs, but, for a child, let's beat him or wait until he gets older to level some other punishment. Let's not, oh, I don't know, try to help him or anything. He's just another human being after all.

He needs something, I can't understand why 'the system' will stand around and watch a sociopath do his thing. He obviously has a major mental problem, he needs help.

Yea, beating the kid won't do anything - except possibly make matters worse. And at this age, while I believe the child is fully aware of his actions, he is also aware that he can get away with it because there is no proper punishment. I don't believe he thinks his actions are ethically justifiable though. He's not delusional or a sociopath - he's an eight-year old kid that gets a high on killing small creatures. Maybe he should play some COD and kill some humans for a real thrill, lol.

Formal rehabilitation seems a bit pointless though, especially at this age. The parents should really be talking to him about this constantly and find out what the motivation is - I'm sure they are trying that anyway.

Also, he'd probably become a really good pig farmer.

Praxius, your response to this is shocking to say the least. Beat him! Why? You don't beat these children. You TEACH these children. Sociopaths can be cured if treated by the age of 15 years. The treatment doesn't start or end with a beating. He's probably already either being beaten or is watching someone else get beaten. He needs a lot of TLC. I believe my ex-daughter-in-law is a sociopath. She had her children for two days last week. Because her son did not comb his hair the way she wanted, she started heavy slapping around. She went to our son and told him what she did but she put the blame all on the child. His hair is a little long. It's summer and he has "beach hair". He washes it and gives it a good shake and that's his combing. It dries and looks fine. Trying to comb long wet hair just makes it look stupid. Was a physical fight with a 12 year old that you only see a few hours a week worth it? The kids all spent Mon & Tues camping with us. My grandson came seeking many hugs. I have lots to give. The boy in the story may seem like a monster and right now, in a way, he is. But with lots of love and understanding, he can change. He can come to the understanding that what he did was wrong and cruel. He probably needs to be removed from his current environment.

I wonder how long it will take for him to take a hammer to one of his classmates.
It's fairly easy to judge if the kid starts to escalate his abuse.
Serial killers usually start out with pets
and at some point move on to people.
Yes, "usually" is the key word.

Maybe the only recourse might be to play nice for now and hope for the best. It's just that 'rehabilitation' seems a bit pointless as well. It could be a one time surge of excitement as well. The parents should really be trying to talk to him about this constantly and find out what the motivation is - I'm sure they are anyway.
One or both of the parents are probably the cause. Play nice and hope for the best! NO. Teach nice and plan for the best.

That's my bet.

Nope. The kid needs active therapy.

you're using the wrong end of the correlation....

serial killers usually start with animals, but, not everyone who kills an animal turns into a serial killer. especially if given some help at a young age.

People have killed animals for "sport" since time immemorial. Why is it that a modern ideology can be used to judge most of humanity as sick or needing help? It needs to be explained to the child that in a socialist nanny state killing animals without the proper "authority" is viewed as wrong - then the inherent psychological weaknesses that implies should also be explained. Who knows, maybe this kid could actually be worth a damn one day?

A good percentage of serial killers started out by torturing and killing animals. If we discover that our little, eight year old Johnny has beaten a pet dog to death and later killed other animals apparently for pleasure, we should be damned worried about that correlation and the future of this little boy.

Yeah, but you can't pretend it's a given, unless you can prove that a good percentage of animal abusers go on to become serial killers. Get what I mean?

There are way more animal abusers in the world than there are serial killers.

That's not to say the kid doesn't need counselling, it's just one of my pet peeves when people use pop psych to try to evaluate from a distance the outcome of a child.

 For sport, yes, not for cruelty (at least not those who follow societies wishes).
Why is it that a modern ideology can be used to judge most of humanity as sick or needing help?
Because society has a preference as to how its members behave maybe? :tard:
It needs to be explained to the child that in a socialist nanny state killing animals without the proper "authority" is viewed as wrong -
So you think the kid doesn't know it's wrong to kill someone else's animals and that killing with cruelty is wrong? lmao
then the inherent psychological weaknesses that implies should also be explained.
It's worth a try but the kid is 8 years old. Best treat the symptoms first, then attack the cause when it can be effective.
Who knows, maybe this kid could actually be worth a damn one day?
Maybe.

That, too.
