It wasn’t 15 minutes into the coverage of this afternoon’s massive and certainly disastrous earthquake just 10 miles from Port-au-Prince on CNN, when Wolf Blitzer cut off the weeping Haitian ambassador to the US to go to a CNN staffer who spent another 2-3 minutes blathering about the lack — surprising, apparently — of United States troops on Haitian soil. But not to worry, he assures, Southcom, the US military’s bureaucracy for meddling in the internal affairs of our Latin American neighbors, could wrangle some firepower to help out our Haitian friends in their hour of need. More evidence of our society’s cultural embrace of military solutions to every problem.

Why would there be?. They have no oil, they aren't of strategic importance nor do they supposedly contain "WMD's". America only helps those that can repay in turn.

Nothing like useing a horrible tragedy to push your anti American Agenda.

“The good news is that there are many, many organizations in Haiti,” says Elizabeth Furst Frank, vice president of global program operations at AmeriCares, which is sending medical aid to Haiti, where the US-based group has had a presence for 25 years. “So you’ll see a faster response faster than in Myanmar after the cyclone, because so many NGOs are well-established and will be responding in any number of ways.”

In Washington, US officials held an emergency meeting on its response. “We stand ready to assist the people of Haiti,” President Obama said. US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, said “the United States is offering our full assistance to Haiti and others in the region. We will be providing both civilian and military disaster relief and humanitarian assistance.”

Military solutions. The OP is obviously unaware or ignorant of the manpower and logistics that the military could and will deploy to Haitai. This is one reason that p***** them off. We will help Haiti and people will get all bent out of shape because we did so.

The Coast Guard has mobilized cutters and aircraft: The service deployed the crews of a C-130 Hercules cargo plane; the Valiant, a Reliance-class cutter; and the medium-endurance cutters Forward, Tahoma and Mohawk. According to a Coast Guard statement, additional Coast Guard assets in the region are also standing by to render assistance if needed.
The U.S. military has a long history of involvement in Haiti, including major interventions like Operation Uphold Democracy in 1994 and 1995. More recently, Haiti has been a destination for military-led humanitarian assistance missions like Continuing Promise 2009, pictured here. The Associated Press, quoting White House sources, says that less than 20 U.S. military personnel are currently in the country, and they are prepared to take part in humanitarian operations.

Some of you are complete idiots, there is no reason, never was for American troops to be stationed in Haiti. We have the largest Haitian population out side Haiti. The U.S. has been rebuilding Haiti ever since it was devastated by 4 hurricanes, a strong American presence has always been there and probably always will be. here are many Haitian aid organizations within the U.S. that jumped into action as soon as the quake happened. As to foreign aid for Haiti, I challenge any country to give as much as United States does.

The US has an economy 3 times larger than 2nd place (EU doesn't count as a country).... so uh yea, do you really expect any other country to give as much?.

FAILED

Well the reality is that the US is already heading over there to help and there is no way that Haiti can repay the funds that will be expended on their behalf.

From CNN..

At the Pentagon, the U.S. military said humanitarian aid was being prepared for shipping, but it was not yet clear where or how it would be sent. A U.S. aviation source said the control tower at the Port-au-Prince international airport collapsed, possibly hindering efforts to fly relief supplies into the country.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told reporters that Washington is offering "our full assistance" to Haiti. "And our prayers are with the people who have suffered, their families and their loved ones," she said. The deputy chief of the U.S. mission in Haiti, David Lindwall, told Clinton that he saw "significant damage" from the quake and said U.S. officials there expect "serious loss of life," Crowley said.

Failed miserably I may add.

What you seem to forget, the U.S, is a country made up of people who honestly care. It is the will of the people who decide what to give, not the goverment, and YES I expect every country and person to at least match us. You as a individual can help. Enough of just spouting off, how about really helping out without trying to fulfill whatever political agenda you may have.

Some people just have nothing better to do with their time than hammer belligerence into a keyboard. Why aren't you (the propagandic author) down there sifting through rubble or rolling bandages?

Not a bad idea. Cannot get a plane to Haiti now, seems their airport control tower has been destroyed and all commercial flights are canceled .

The US has a long history of helping other countries in times of natural disasters, usually being first on the scene. I applaud them on their humanitarian efforts, EagleSmack.

I'm not so sure if the US was the first to respond. Gordon Brown was making a statement at about 2am British time last night talking about helping Haiti, the West's poorest country. But it was only a couple of hours or so that Obama announced what measures he will be taking to help.
