(I wish there was a "Women's Issues" forum. lol Couldn't figure out where to put this).

  • 1 in 4 women will be sexually assaulted during her lifetime. Of these, half will be against women under the age of 16 (Ontario Women's Directorate).
  • 1 in 2 women has experienced some form of sexual violence (Statistics Canada Survey, 1993).
  • 1 in 3 women has experienced some form of sexual violence that can be legally defined as Sexual Assault (Statistics Canada Survey, 1993).
  • According to the Solicitor General, a sexual assault is reported in Canada every 25 minutes. Another report, from the Canadian Advisory Council on the Status of Women, indicates that every 17 minutes a woman is sexually assaulted.
  • It is estimated that 80-90% of Canadian women will experience sexual harassment at some point in their working lives.
  • 81% of sexual assault cases were perpetrated by men who were known to the women (Canadian Panel on Violence Against Women, 1991).
  • 57% of rapes happen while on dates (Ontario Women's Directorate).
  • 60% of sexual assaults occur in private homes (Ontario Women's Directorate).
  • 38% of rapes and sexual assaults occur in the victims own home (Ontario Women's Directorate).
  • Only 1 in 3 assailants is a total stranger; 2 out of 3 assailants are friends, acquaintances, boyfriends, co-workers or relatives (Ontario Women's Directorate).
  • 83% of women with disabilities will be sexually assaulted during their lifetime (Ontario Women's Directorate)
  • The majority of date and acquaintance rape victims are young women aged 16-24 (Ontario Women's Directorate).
  • Date rape has the lowest reporting rate of all forms of sexual assault. It is estimated that only 1% of all date rapes are reported to the police (Ontario Women's Directorate).
  • According to statistics Canada, only 6% of all sexual assaults are reported to police.
  • Nearly 90% of sexually assaulted women do not consult with any helping professional after the assault.
  • A study found that 60% of Canadian college-aged males said that they would commit sexual assault if they were certain they would not get caught (Ontario Women's Directorate)

Niagara Region Sexual Assault Centre - Facts

Are you shocked yet?

I'm still looking for current stats. StatsCan seems to not want to discuss the issue. Is it embarassing for the pols and bureaucrats?

First thing that strikes me is that the data aren't very good. For instance, "81% of sexual assault cases were perpetrated by men who were known to the women" and "2 out of 3 assailants are friends, acquaintances, boyfriends..." etc. are not consistent claims; is it 2 out of 3 or 4 out of 5? Moreover, certain women's organizations have a history of inflating such statistics, or simply guessing at them, in order to increase the shock value. You see the same thing in stats about domestic violence against women, as if it never happens to men, when detailed longitudinal studies show the rates of violence for men against women and women against men are about the same.

I don't believe those numbers, and I won't until I see the detailed methodology and definitions. Wothehell does "some form of sexual violence" mean? Pinching? Biting? Slapping? Bondage? Some people like that, then complain about it afterwards. And when the information comes from an organization that clearly has an agenda, like the Ontario Women's Directorate, they're doubly suspect.

Milkmen, plumbers, the little perv at the local donut shop, etc.?

Aaah, Stats can say anything you want them to?
I noticed at StatsCan for 2000 they said that only about 5% of sexual assaults are reported. That by itself would make it very difficult to determine actual numbers.

I guess googling success depends on how you bite your lip or raise your eyebrows.

I wonder if there are stats about the number of people who use the threat of being charged as a means to control or the number of times a false charge has been laid. Rape is a despicable action ... so are the people who use it to their advantage.

How about a teenage being held down by one of Windsor,s finest. Does this count as a lie or statistic?

how true it sounds Anna... I don't think it has ever changed since the beginning of man, except most men have become more respectful of women on a whole.

Sex is an animal instinct, rape is taking it when you want it against the persons will. I don't think any woman deserves to be raped BUT in saying that there are some women whom carry on in such a manner it could be seen as deserving.

I had a dear friend who went to prison for 7 years for rape! (out in 3 years) I can tell you it was NOT rape. I was at the party this took place, the guy was a very popular man and the young woman involved was old enough to know how to conduct herself. They were partying together and having a wow of a time, she was all over him like a rash! She wanted him as much as he wanted her and it was clearly obvious.. When did it turn into rape? Not that night .... It turned into rape the next day!

This guys life was turned upside down and to this day myself and others will never agree that he came close to raping this woman. Those kind of events are just not on...

I think that maybe you're leaving something out.... at any time during the evening did she say no? Doesn't matter if his pants were down, his dick was up, and her legs were spread...if she said NO, and he continued, then it was rape.

There was never a NO gerry, they were "doing it" in the morning too... we all sat down to coffee together in the morning, those two were sweet as nuts... She calls him up a few days later, he's got plans and then all hell lets loose...

gerryh get off your high horse. kiwi_NZ has told us his side of the story. What reason do you have to doubt that story? Until I hear differently from someone who was there, I'll believe it.

Thank you juan

it's okay. I was there, I was using a good example of what can happen, often does happen to the guys and I am a woman, I protect women and I am somewhat of a feminist *smiles*

I agree with Gerry that when a woman says NO it is NO and should always be NO but sometimes that doesn't apply and sometimes it is not always the man's fault.

That's all I have to say on said topic. Most of things Anna has mentioned in the stats have happened to me and I agree to most women. Some women should say no ... some find it too late ...

Kiwi now throws much ***loving calm dust*** around the room....

bye de byes..

Fancy juan thinking I was a man.. Better change me profile pic (lol)

Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.
I think anyone who would falsly accuse someone of rape should serve the full term themselves.

Right on the money, Mr. Wolf. Both are abusive, intrusive, and controlling.

If only 6% of date rapes are reported then how do they know there is another 94%? If they aren't reported, what is the bases for making that statement?

This subject is very difficult to discuss because of the variables..

My first girlfriend was abused and sexually assulted. I helped her and took great care of her all to see her leave me for someone else who treated her the same way. She ended up doing drugs, abused again and dead in the parking of the mall next to my house a few years after we split up..

My ex wife was also abused and her ex did 2 years in jails for what he did. After taking her in and helping her thru the tough times she left me and is now seeing another guy who treats her very abusingly..

Needless to say, my next girlfriend will not come from an abusive relationship. Although you never know these things when you first meet someone..

But not being an abuser I find it difficult to understand why these women went back to such life styles if they had it so good here.

Do statistics include guys who take good care of women ?
