China National News
Monday 9th March, 2009

An unarmed US navy surveillance vessel in the South China Sea has been menaced by five Chinese ships.

The Pentagon has said the ships Chinese ships manoeuvred dangerously close to the US vessel after 'provocative and aggressive actions' over a period of five days.

The US has made a formal complaint to China's military attache at the Pentagon over the incident, which happened as the USNS Impeccable was on routine operations in international waters 75 miles south of Hainan Island.

Impeccable is designed specifically to detect underwater threats such as submarines for the US navy.

The Pentagon identified the Chinese boats as a naval intelligence-gathering ship, a Bureau of Maritime Fisheries Patrol Vessel, a State Oceanographic Administration patrol vessel, and two small trawlers; all of which were involved in the aggressive manoeuvring.

The US ship sprayed one Chinese vessel with water from fire hoses to try to force it away, but the Chinese vessels dropped pieces of wood in its path, forcing it to make an emergency stop.

A Pentagon spokesman has referred to the Chinese actions as 'unprofessional' and violating the international requirement to operate with due regard to the safety of other lawful users of the ocean.

Hmmm ... didn't the US just borrow a lot of cash from them?....
Yup. The savings of Chinese peasants have been funding our unsustainable lifestyle for the last 20 years. Paying it back is going to be a real bitch when we having nothing to offer in return. What happens at that point?

Why wouldn't a country harass a ship sent to spy on them?

Imperialists always think they own everything.

I don't like the title of this thread. It should be: Americans play a dangerous game with Chinese sovereignty.

The name is irrelevent. Is the Indian Ocean off limits to all except Indians?

The Persian Gulf to just Persians?

The Phillippine Sea to just Fillipinos?

Ooooooh!

The Gulf of Mexico is international waters too but a US Coast guard WILL come on your boat with guns pulled and pointed at you and toss your yacht. Under whose authority? How does that differ from a pirate?

You sound a like a Chris Crocker video....

Leave America alone sniff sniff boo hoo.

China owns the South China Sea now? So much for freedom of the seas.

Like I said: Imperialists always think they own everything.

Freedom isn't the right to tromp around where ever you like and to spy on whomever you like. Perhaps the Chinese feel the South China Sea should be free of vermin looking for another country to illegally invade, for example.
