Russia's First Channel on Friday televised images of what it said were burning Georgian armoured vehicles in Tskhinvali, capital of the South Ossetian breakaway region of Georgia. Georgia launched a massive attack Friday to regain control over South Ossetia.

10 Russian peacekeepers killed; Georgia claims control of South Ossetia

Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili said in a television interview Friday that Russia is fighting a war with his country as tanks rolled into the breakaway Georgian province of South Ossetia.

"Russia is fighting war with us in our own territory," Saakashvili told CNN. "And we are in this situation of self-defence against our neighbour."

Russian military said that 10 of its peacekeepers were killed and 30 wounded in South Ossetia, but released few other details. South Ossetia has close ties with Russia, which has peacekeepers in the region, though Georgia alleges they back the separatists.

Saakashvili confirmed earlier reports from a Georgian official that Georgian forces have shot down two Russian combat aircraft.

Interior Ministry spokesman Shota Utiashvili said the planes were downed while Georgian territory was being raided, but did not provide further details.

Russia's Defence Ministry had denied an earlier Georgian report about one Russian plane being downed. There was no immediate comment on the latest claim, and neither country has issued an official declaration of war.

Hostilities erupted when Georgia launched a massive attack Friday to regain control of its breakaway province of South Ossetia, using heavy artillery, aircraft and armour. Later Friday, a Georgian cabinet minister said their troops were in control of South Ossetia's capital.

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin warned Georgia that its attack on the province would draw retaliation, and hours later, Russian TV reported, a convoy of Russian tanks rolled into South Ossetia.
Russian aircraft bombed Georgian villages: president

Separatist officials in South Ossetia said 15 civilians had been killed in fighting overnight after Georgia attacked. Georgian troops fired missiles at the provincial capital, Tskhinvali, an official said, and many buildings were on fire.

Saakashvili said in a televised statement that Russian aircraft bombed several Georgian villages and other civilian facilities. He said there were injuries and damage to the buildings.

Saakashvili also said his government's troops had seized the outskirts of Tskhinvali and were fighting for control of the centre. Georgian forces also have seized several villages around the capital.

In his televised address, Saakashvili announced a full military mobilization with reservists being called into action.
Worst fighting since 1992

Saakashvili long has pledged to restore Tbilisi's rule over South Ossetia and another breakaway province, Abkhazia. Both regions have run their own affairs without international recognition since splitting from Georgia in the early 1990s, and both have built up ties with Moscow.

Most residents of both provinces have Russian passports. An open war could prompt Russia to send in more forces under the claim of protecting its citizens. Friday's fighting was the worst outburst of hostilities in the regions since they won a de-facto independence in a war that ended in 1992.

Russia was criticized by the West for provoking tensions by sending warplanes over South Ossetia last month.

Most of South Ossetia, which is roughly 1.5 times the size of Luxembourg, has been under the control of an internationally unrecognized separatist government since 1992. Georgian forces hold several swaths of it.

Relations between Georgia and Russia worsened notably this year as Georgia pushed to join NATO and Russia dispatched additional peacekeepers to Abkhazia.

Well if the other proviences want to seperate, then why not let them? Seems like Georgia is trying to force their authority over an area which doesn't want their authority and Russia is backing them up.

Sort of reminds me of a province or two here at times. Quebec being the loudest.
Anyway, I see nothing wrong with people wanting to be separate from others; especially if they find the others obnoxious.

Agreed... if Quebec truly wanted to leave Canada, I say get it the hell over with already and leave. But there's no justification for forcing them to remain a part of a nation they don't want to be a part of.... esspecially if they're supposed to be a Democracy.

I don't trust Putin. He seems to have some kind of pan-slavic vision of Russia, that is imperial in scope.. and anything but democratic. He, or at least the clique he controls, is without any type of political restraint in Russia now. Russia's involvement with closely aligned ethnic groups with blood and religious ties to the motherland has always been a factor in Russian foreign policy. It has sparked World Wars in the past. But Putin seems particularly ruthless.. and agile.. in acting upon it.

Russia is just remembering it has a nuclear arsenal that can end the world, and unlike almost every other nation in the world, doesn't have to give a damn what the US says about matters that are not critical to the US.

OMFG. 8O8O8O8O8O8O8O8O8O8O

All greetings, I am from Russia and specially registered here to tell you the whole truth. And that now is actually happening in South Ossetia.

Saakashvili is a second Hitler. He arranges the genocide in South Ossetia. Yes, you do not see what is happening there. Georgian troops attacked late at night to peaceful cities. Under the shelling hit ordinary residents of South Ossetia. Then the shelling ended, and began again at 2 pm on August 8. Died a lot of civilians at the hands of Georgia troops.

Saakashvili bastard, Georgia troops kill children, old people, women in their own homes, they were not able to leave the conflict zone and shot in their own apartments !!!!!!!!! Yes, you do not know what is happening here!! Georgia attacked the South Ossetia interrupting peace treaty!

On the territory of South Ossetia are Russian people, several dozens have died under fire from Georgian troops!!

In response to this, Russia agreed to protect the residents of South Ossetia troops entering 58 - oy Russian army in South Ossetia, because civilians are dying there! They hid in cellars, the whole city destroyed!!

Heavy armour Georgia shelled Tskhinvali whole day (8 August), loss of life among civilians!! Destroyed homes, hospitals, schools, many wounded and dead!

Georgia has aspirations of joining Nato, which would have made the Russsian incursion an Act of War on Nato. Georgia is a central transit point and pipeline for the huge (20 billion barrels) Caspian Sea oil reserves and those of the southern Caucasus, on Russia's southern flank including Chechnya, which of course bring Islam into the equation. This could be very messy.

Politics and Pipelines

Your take on thing sounds highly biased, towards Russian interests, Stradavar. There has been no reports of genocide in Georgia by Saakashvili from any sources I trust. And i don't trust anything associated with the Russian intelligence services, who owe complete loyalty to Putin and his political faction. Are you sure you can trust your own sources. There has been an on going and violent separatist insurgency in Georgia, a sovereign country has the right to maintain order in within its borders.. and there is no doubt that South Ossetia is not within Russia's borders.

I know [SIZE=-1]Russian President Dmitry Medvedev is a hand picked successor of Putin, which is why i was careful to note it was Putin and his political faction who were calling the shots. I saw Putin at the Olympics Opening Ceremonies, taking the salute from the Russian athletes..talking with George Bush on the issue.. he sure seems to be letting everyone on the world stage know he is still in charge as Prime Minister.

You are not really going to attract friends by making accusations and being verbally abusive. To sound like the aggressor doesn't help the credibility of your message.

Forget about Putin's ok? What you are adhering to it.

We are now talking about a war in South Ossetia, but what I read now in the first message, which quoted Saakashvili, I realized that this is complete nonsense, and people hang noodles on the ears, misinformed them. Saakashvili is not the first time, accuses Russia of any action, and believe this is complete nonsense, all that he says.

Can you understand that South Ossetia need help in protecting? Do you understand that there are killed civilians, and South Ossetian forces without the help of Russia would not be enough to discourage thousands of Georgian army.

Georgia have much more ammunition than that of Ossetia, Saakashvili knows it, and once we started to defend South Ossetia in its invasion of Georgian troops, Saakashvili immediately began shouting that his country bombing Russia. Saakashvili complete idiot!

He is trying to mislead the whole world that actually succeed him. All are beginning to think that Russia attacked Georgia . Lol.

Georgia: Russia has invaded and we are under attack

1,400 reported dead. Georgia to withdraw troops from Iraq for use in South Ossetia.
By Gary Fennelly
Friday, 8 August 2008

Russian First Channel claims these are burning Georgian armored vehicles are seen in Tskhinvali in the South Ossetian breakaway region of Georgia on Friday, Aug. 8, 2008.

Russia sent troops and tanks into the breakaway Georgian province of South Ossetia today as Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin declared "the war has started".
Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov said: "War started today in South Ossetia when Georgia attacked Russian peacekeepers in the disputed region."
Earlier an official in Georgia's National Security Council said Russia invaded Georgia.
Kakha Lamaia said: "If it's not war, then we are very close to it. The Russians have invaded Georgia and we are under attack."
Georgian President Mikhail Saakasvili told CNN: "Russia is fighting a war with us in our own territory.
"This is a clear intrusion on another country's territory. We have Russian tanks on our territory, jets on our territory in broad daylight."
Saakashvili accused its neighbor of a "well-planned invasion" and called on reservists to sign up for duty. He said "150 Russian tanks, armoured personnel carriers and other vehicles" had entered South Ossetia.
The president of the Georgian breakaway region, Eduard Kokoity, was quoted as saying: "About 1,400 people have died. We will check these figures, but the order of the numbers is around this. We have this on the basis of reports from relatives."
Witnesses claim Tskhinvali is devastated. "I saw bodies lying on the streets, around ruined buildings, in cars," said one.
"It's impossible to count them now. There is hardly a single building left undamaged."
The Georgian government said it will try to protect Russian peacekeepers who are in the disputed region. However Russia claims 10 Russian peacekeepers have already been killed.
As the fighting escalates Georgia says it will withdraw 1,000 troops from Iraq and redeploy them to the region.
Nato, the US and the EU are calling for an immediate end to hostilities.
Georgia claims to have shot down five Russian war planes as the two countries fight for control of the breakaway province of South Ossetia.
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has vowed to protect Russian citizens in the region.
Medvedev said: "In accordance with the constitution and the federal law, I, as president of Russia, am obliged to protect the lives and dignity of Russian citizens wherever they are located," Mr Medvedev said in televised remarks.
"We won't allow the death of our compatriots to go unpunished."
Georgian troops are currently observing a three-hour ceasefire to let civilians leave the besieged capital, Tskhinvali.
Saakashvili said most of South Ossetia had been "liberated" in an overnight offensive.
"Most of South Ossetia's territory is liberated and is controlled by Georgia," Saakashvili said in televised comments today.
"Russian flights are ongoing in the centre of Tskhinvali (the South Ossetian capital)... I demand Russia stop bombardment of peaceful Georgian cities."
