Insurgent attack frees hundreds from Kandahar prison
Last Updated: Friday, June 13, 2008 | 4:31 PM ET

CBC News
Militants have attacked the main prison in the southern Afghan city of Kandahar, killing an unspecified number of police officers and setting all prisoners free, Afghan officials said Friday

Around 10 p.m., Taliban insurgents drove a car filled with explosives up to Sarposa prison's main gate and detonated it, destroying the gate and killing all police officers in the vicinity, CBC's Paul Hunter reported from Kandahar.

Afghan officials also said Taliban insurgents fired several rockets at parts of the prison.

"All the prisoners escaped. There is no one left," said Wali Karzai, president of Kandahar's provincial council and the brother of President Hamid Karzai.

About 1,170 inmates were believed to have been in the prison and may now be roaming the streets of Kandahar City, said Hunter.

Witnesses reported seeing Canadian tanks roll into the city about an hour after the incident.

Canadian Forces are in command of Kandahar and most of the roughly 2,500 Canadian troops in Afghanistan are stationed there....

I'm not a military strategist, but this looks like a significant shift in power. I hope our boys are ready for this.

I hope our boys will look the other way, or help them to get farther away!!!!!!

What a wonderful thing that would be!!!
Canada and Canadians would be celebrated the world over, except in the US and Canada itself, sadly!

Oh, maybe, just maybe our boys waited purposely for an hour to let them get away!! That could be possible!!

Have you lost your mind?

Really, sometimes you are just out of it.

Many of these prisoners were common criminals.

The rest were Taliban.........who would have you whipped, beaten, imprisoned or stoned to death for any number of things you regularly do here in Canada, like be seen in public without either your father, brother or husband to escort you (don't have any male relatives? Good. Starve to death inside), be seen without your face and body completely covered, and on and on.

To say nothing of which these people harboured the folks that murdered 24 Canadians on 9-11, and over 2500 of our allies.

Not to mention the 85 soldiers we have lost in Afghanistan.

Pull your head out of the sand and look around. Being against the war in Afghanistan is a valid political opinion. Support for the enemy borders on sedition.

Guess who will have to hunt these guys down again?

I'm trying REALLY hard to be polite here.

How could Nato be so careless, I mean, don't they have any input as to the security
of prisoners, it's for their own benefit, what's the point of working so hard to bring
the taliban, (or whoever) to lockup, where they belong, then allow all of them to
be freed, while someone wasn't looking.
It's not rocket science.

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization is out of place in Afghanistan and as a consequence thier incompetance shows.

I find myself agreeing somewhat with Colpy here. This is bad news for Canadian soldiers. I expect most of these people are dangerous and many will choose to fight with Canada's adversaries.

I wish no harm to anyone especially Canadian soldiers. Criminals should be incarerated. Our adversaries should be treated as POWs.

Regarding being whipped, beaten, imprisoned... I wonder how these people were treated while in prison?

What goes around comes around. Do you think they were whipped, beaten and imprisoned sufficiently C?

Regarding Stoning. About a dozen countries practice this barbaric form of capital punishment:

Back on topic. Many of these prisoner will have little or no choice but to join the Taliban. I fear for the safety of Canadian soldiers and hope Canadian successfully recapture as many of these prisonsers as possible. But I grudgingly respect what appears to be a well executed tactical success by the Taliban.

Thank you, EAO, for a reasonable response..........

I don't like anyone whipped or beaten at all............and Afghanistan does not have a good reputation for this stuff....

Were these POW's or common street criminals? Were they handed over by Canadian Forces? Do they have an axe to grind with Canada? I'll have to admit.... It's a great recruiting thing for Taliban.

Apparently they were a mix of criminals, Taliban/insurgents and people waiting for trials. Prisoners can be held for years without trial in Afghanistan.

The prison, it turns out, was being developed with Canadian help into a showcase.........with a library, Mosque, education facilties, more humane detention.....all with lots of Canadian help and assistance.

Here is an article from the New York Post with some more details:

The prison break is also likely to increase pressure on President Karzai, who is coming under increasing criticism at home and abroad for his faltering leadership and his inability to manage the country. Even as international donors pledged $21 billion in aid for Afghanistan this week, many of them have criticized his failure to tackle the problems of security and corruption.
