Russian soldiers 'used for sex'

The Russian military is reported to be investigating claims that army conscripts were forced to work as male prostitutes in St Petersburg. The command of the interior ministry unit denied the claims made by the Soldiers' Mothers human rights group.
The group says it was contacted by a parent of a conscript who had been forced to work as a male prostitute.
Last year, an 18-year-old soldier was so badly beaten that he had to have his legs and genitals amputated.
The BBC's James Rodgers in Moscow says the latest claims follow a series of scandals which have damaged the Russian army's reputation.
A spokeswoman for the Soldiers' Mothers, Ella Polyakova, told the BBC that in St Petersburg there was "a network of clients" who would pay for sex with soldiers.
Older servicemen are said to have forced younger conscripts into prostitution and then taken the money for themselves.
Brutality
The Sychev bullying case drew worldwide attention to Russian army abuses.
Private Andrei Sychev was forced to squat for several hours by fellow soldiers and then tied to a chair and brutally beaten up last year.
As a result he developed gangrene in his legs and genitals, which had to be amputated.
Now permanently disabled, Pte Sychev has just announced that he is to write a book about his ordeal.
Such cases have highlighted the appalling conditions suffered by some Russian service personnel at a time when Russia is seeking a greater role on the world stage, our correspondent says.

What can one say to such appalling actions... Hearing of such atrocities makes one feel lost, confused, about humankind. One wakes up each morning optimistic of a new dawn, looks into the window of the world, only to find that insanity prevails prolifically. It's soul shattering!

You don't "join" the Russian Army, they have mandatory conscription. Say what you want about Canada, but if there is one thing I love about it, is that you don't have to go off to Iraq and get you legs blown off by a bomb unless that is your kind of thing.

Anyway the Russian Army turned Grozny into a pancake and exterminated 1/4
the population of Chechneya, so it shouldn't be exactly shocking that they might be a little rough when it comes to the hazing rituals.

I'm puzzled as to why you would think that I said one did 'join' the Russian Army?

Are you sure you are reading the right post? a) I didn't say anything about Canada! I am here at CanadianContent because I like the site, and the people! b) Why would you think it might be my thing to go off to Iraq and get my legs blown off? What's that all about?

Yes, this kind of thing is absolutely terrible. Nowadays in Russia the army is the nightmare of every mother, who has a son. Even if a conscript is lucky enough not to encounter the kind of atrocities mentioned in Sanctus' post, the living conditions and the food is so bad, that hardly anyone comes back from the army in the same state of health he had when he was drafted.

And as for Grozny and the Chechnya conflict, my personal feeling is that the whole thing is just plain money laundering. It is a shame, how many lives were ruined by it, and how many people killed, including civilians.

.

How funny. At one time the Russian/Soviet soldier was a well trained "machine"

Any soldier is a well-trained machine, be he Russian, or English, or German. And all machines need good maintenance, otherwise they break.

Interesting way for the seniors of the service to make extra money. Are they not well paid, the Russian solider?

I am not sure about their actual payment, but it is indeed very small.
It doesn't in any way justify such actions, though.
