LONDON (AFP) - Beatles legend Paul McCartney and supermodel Kate Moss are two of the top 10 Britons voted onto a shortlist for naming Britain's greatest living icon.

Acting, music and fashion dominated the shortlist, selected by viewers of the BBC television programme The Culture Show.

Singers David Bowie, Kate Bush and former The Smiths frontman Morrissey made the cut, as did actors Michael Caine and Stephen Fry.

Fashion designer Vivienne Westwood, television nature programmes presenter David Attenborough and playwright Alan Bennett also featured in the top 10.

The names of more than 500 Britons were suggested by viewers.

Only three women featured in the top 10, and the show's producer Edward Morgan said he was surprised that Queen Elizabeth II, former premier Margaret Thatcher, and the author of the "Harry Potter" novels were not included.

"It's a striking list -- no queen, no Maggie, no J.K. Rowling. Best of all this is a totally open race. Any of the 10 could win."

Voting closes on November 27 and the winner will be announced on December 16.
