RCMP Commissioner Giuliano Zaccardelli apologized to Maher Arar for the "nightmare" he endured in a Syrian prison, and said he has no intention of resigning from his post.

Well, from what I know, and correct me if I'm wrong, the RCMP are the reason Arar got sent back to Syria and tortured. That makes the RCMP obligated to apologize to Arar.

Did the RCMP send him back? No. Therefore it was not the RCMP's fault

On September 26, 2002, during a stopover in New York en route from Tunis to Montreal, Arar was detained by the United States Immigration and Naturalization Service who were acting upon false and misleading information information supplied by the RCMP[1]. Despite carrying a Canadian passport, he was deported to Syria in accordance with a U.S. policy known as "extraordinary rendition".

Check it out at Wikipedia:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maher_Arar

The RCMP gave false information to U.S. Immigration and then Arar got shipped to Syria and tortured. It is the RCMP's fault.

Shoddy Police work pure and simple at it's best. God help those who are innocent and the RCMP get you in their sights, how many innocent people have to go to jail for crimes they didn't commit (like Arar) before this organization is held accountable to the public. The RCMP screwed up and had this young man picked up in the States as a Torrist suspect based on "lies" and faulty Intel he was tortured and god knows what damage to his person will be long term. At least the US used the phrase "Terrorist Suspect" Canadian RCMP called him "A person of Interest". He was owed an apology to say the least.

Amen! I can't believe how many people think this was acceptable in the name of security. It's easy to say that until it's you or yours getting tortured isn't it? It always makes me think of this:

First They Came for the Jews

First they came for the Jews
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for the Communists
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Communist.
Then they came for the trade unionists
and I did not speak out
because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for me
and there was no one left
to speak out for me.

What I posted originally was that Arar fit a profile. The RCMP can give out whatever information they believe, true or not. As you said, the U.S. Immigration sent him back. They should have verified the facts. It is their fault.
