Protests continue against bringing nine Chinese TV channels to Canada
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

TORONTO (CP) - About two dozen people angered by attempts to bring controversial Chinese-language television channels to Canada protested Thursday outside the headquarters of Rogers Cable.

Demonstrators lined the sidewalk outside the downtown office building and silently held up placards calling for the broadcaster to end its application to air the channels. The group Canadians Against Propaganda said the channels are controlled by the Chinese Communist Party and warned that programming would incite hatred over the airwaves.

"They will propagate the (CCP) ideology," said protest organizer Elaine Xie.

"It is propaganda and it should not be allowed to broadcast in Canada. It's against humanity."

The group said the party has previously produced programs that celebrated the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in the United States and tried to cover up the SARS outbreak in China.

Xie said the party also has a history of attacking Christians, Tibetans, Falun Gong practitioners, and Taiwan.

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission is soliciting public opinion on the channels before making a decision on whether to allow broadcast.

An original deadline for submissions has been extended after a flood of petitions, form letters, and close to 400 comments both in support of and against the channels was sent to the CRTC.

Xie said they planned to present the federal regulator with damning evidence.

"We have tapes from those nine TV channels and how they incite hatred. We will file enough evidence for the CRTC to make a good decision," Xie said.

Rogers could not be reached for comment.

I have come to a solution .....I think the only fair action to counter this would be to allow FoxNews on regular cable in Canada

This is all part of "multiculturism"....

Commi TV will fit right in and give the CBC a run for its viewers.

In a democracy we have a chose to watch what we want to. I do not like fox news so I don't watch it. I don't try to protest to shut it down, or anything else. You have a choice in this nation to watch what you wish to watch. So don't tell me if I have to right to watch what the Chiness Communist Party what to put on or not, I'll make my own mind up.

Communist Broadcasting

If the nine networks in question are under the administration of the Communist Party of the People's Republic of China, then that in and of itself is not a reason to refuse to broadcast such networks, in my opinion; however, if there are in fact programs broadcast on such networks that could be construed as hate propaganda, then whatever lawful measures as can be taken should be exercised to prevent such programs from being aired in Canada.

I doubt they would have anything like that Paradox. Most likely the news would be slanted towards pro Chiness government standerds and slants, then anything hateful. If the Chiness government went down to those standerds I would be surprised they have gone so low.

You won't be seeing a socialist slant of "dirty capitalist pigs" of perhaps the 60's and 70's if this had happend, since the Chiness Communist party pretty much believes in capitalism now, though being a more fascist type of capitalism. No we will most likely see news which on China with a Chiness twist and pro-government slant.

Isn't Al Jazeera up there? If they don't preach hate - I don't know what people think they are doing.... it is a propaganda network.

Sounds to me like the door has already been opened for everyone to c'mon down and get some recruits!

I'd like to see an translated Al Jazeera channel in Canada. Once people start hearing exacty what these crackpots are spouting, they will be less likely to pity the poor terrorists who are painted as criminals. They will realize that these people really are violent nut-cases who see us as soon-to-be-dhimmis.

People recognize insane, violent doctrine. What was the last thing Mousaoui's defence team wanted him to do? Speak for himself. Why? because then everyone reaized what nutcase Johnny Jihad really was. Let the Communists and the Islamists speak, and let them discredit themselves.

Great Post Five, Dory and WC. I agree with all your points, but it scares me a wee bit when the fanatics get an audience in Canada. There are some Canadians out there that are full of hate and rage because they lead such pitiful existences these are the types that will watch these channels and develop the ideals of the fanatics. That scares me, at the moment all these pitiful people have are white surpremisists' groups and I don't really want to give them more options.
