Hopefull the authorities will nab this individual soon. Having a double killer on the loose is not a good thing. Next time they might want to try leg shackles in addition to the handcuffs.

He Is Extremely Dangerous
Friday, November 04, 2005

By Catherine Donaldson-Evans

HOUSTON — Police have received a number of substantial leads on and reported sightings of a convicted double murderer who broke loose from Texas' death row, the sheriff's office said Friday.

They are continuing to hunt down Charles Victor Thompson, 35, and trying to figure out exactly how he escaped from the Harris County Jail late Thursday.

"He is extremely dangerous," said Lt. John Martin of the Harris County sheriff's office in a press conference Friday. "We've received a number of significant leads. We do continue to actively search for him."

Martin wouldn't disclose details of the tips his office was investigating.

Thompson somehow found some civilian clothing, changed out of his orange jumpsuit and used a fake ID badge with a photograph and black strip on the back to break out of prison, according to Martin. The convicted killer was in Houston after being re-sentenced last week to execution.

The successful escape could be blamed 100 percent on human error, according to the sheriff's office, since Thompson had to pass by deputies at three or more different locations.

Martin said Thompson told a deputy he was with the Texas Attorney General's office conducting an investigation at the jail, and the story "was convincing enough that the deputy let him out of the facility," the Houston Chronicle online quoted him as saying. "He may have been taken out of the cell block and put in the attorney booth in the guise of having an attorney visit."

But there were still many puzzles left unsolved in how Thompson managed to get through the system and walk free, according to Martin, who said it wasn't clear how he got out of handcuffs. Police so far had "no idea" whether a door was unlocked or he "defeated" the security system.

"Our suspicions are that he may have kept some legal documents with him when he came back from court," Martin told the news conference. "It does suggest that this was preplanned."

He said the intricacy of the plot also could point to accomplices Thompson may have had in breaking out. Investigators were questioning jail employees.

Police didn't know whether Thompson fled on foot or by car.

Thompson had been expected to be returned to the Texas prison system within 45 days, according to Department of Criminal Justice spokeswoman Michelle Lyons.

He was condemned for the 1998 shooting deaths of his ex-girlfriend, Dennise Hayslip, 39, of Tomball, and her new boyfriend, Darren Keith Cain, 30, of Spring.

The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals later upheld his 1999 conviction, but had ordered a new sentencing hearing.

He was re-sentenced by a jury Oct. 28.

Amazing. All the right pieces fell into place for him to pull it off. Like 1 in a billion odds for him to succesfully escape oyu would think, especially since he is a death row inmate.

With the right planning and some skill, it's not hard at all no1. Through time, this individual wound up getting his hands on cilvilian clothing. He surely had the time to produce a fake badge off of one he found (that was misplaced by someone). Anyone can do it. All it takes is a picture of himself. Once he had the plan together, getting out of handcuffs is the easy part. He either had a skeleton handcuff key, or he read up on locksmithing and knew the inner workings of the lock mechanism of the handcuffs and was able to pick the lock or he was one of the few individuals who's skilled in the art of bone and muscle manipulation and was able to simply slide his hands out.

Either way, the authorities need to tighten security for all inmates, particularly those on death row.

..........actually , gotta hand it to him. that was rather smooth, and creative. Not a shot was fired. No one was hurt.

Meanwhile the media is doing a good job at scare tactics. ....

seems he has a "hit" list. Nancy Grace is royally ticked off ... and when SHE gets ticked off..;-)

( I kinda like her. calls a spade a spade. )

It might be tough to track this guy down. If he was able to come up wiht teh strategy of a clean escape from a maximum security facility and on death row, he will surely cover his tracks on the outside. May even leave the country.

Contrary to popular beleif, most escapes from maximum security prisons do not occur by prisoners making a run for it and climbing over barbed wire fences, but rather either walking out (like this guy did) or hitching a ride (like in the back of a postal truck hiding in one of the bags).

quite!!........it is those silly movies that create certain scenarios and people accept them as fact.

would think he had some "help" from somewhere...... and he might well be out of the US by now. Staying IN the US might be really bad for his health.

Don't know the whole story......but it does not sound like he is a serial killer....(as defined).... .......not that it excuses him..// so he may have planned far in advance.

Bet the prison guards are dissed.........as he sure made a fool out of them.

I'm watching America's Most Wanted as we speak and they've just profiled Charles Thompson (the individual who escaped from death row). It appears there is a serious nationwide manhunt on for him.

Absolutely, Ocean. He's given so much to the community. He's had a personal tragedy in his life, which led him to create AMW.

Here's an update on the manhunt for this killer. This guy is now a Federal fugitive, as US Marshals are involved. Border officials have been notifed and are on the look-out in case this guy tries to slip into Canada or Mexico ... a very good possibility.

Search for Escaped Con Goes Nationwide
Sunday, November 06, 2005

HOUSTON — The search for a death row inmate who walked unnoticed out of a Texas county jail become a nationwide manhunt Saturday as authorities investigated whether he had help making the brazen escape.

The U.S. Marshals Office offered a $10,000 reward for the capture of Charles Victor Thompson and designated him a federal fugitive. Officials also alerted airports, border officials and other law enforcement agencies.

"This is an extensive search," said Lt. John Martin of the Harris County Sheriff's Department. "We are relying on the public to report any information that they have."

Thompson, 35, of the Houston suburb of Tomball, escaped Thursday after meeting with an attorney, though not his defense attorney of record, authorities said. He was condemned in 1999 for the shooting deaths of ex-girlfriend Dennise Hayslip, 39, and her boyfriend, Darren Keith Cain, 30.

Martin said Saturday that investigators had found the civilian clothing Thompson wore when he left the building. It was behind one of the sheriff's department's other downtown jail buildings, and some effort had been made to hide it, he said.

"It's pretty clear at this point there was somebody helping him," Martin said.

Authorities also found the fake ID badge Thompson used, which turned out to be an inmate ID card with his photograph issued by the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. Thompson had put a piece of tape over the part of the card that indicates he is an inmate.

Thompson was in the county jail awaiting transfer to a state prison. A jury sentenced him to death Oct. 28 after an appeals court threw out an earlier sentence.

On Thursday, Thompson was taken to a room in the jail for a meeting with his attorney. The visitor, however, was not Thompson's attorney of record, Terrence Gaiser.

Martin said investigators have determined the other person was an attorney, but his name was not released because he is considered a witness.

"We are not necessarily suggesting he was involved with the escape, but we will be speaking with everybody who had contact with Thompson," Martin said.

After the visitor left, Thompson removed his handcuffs and his bright orange prison jumpsuit and got out of a prisoner's booth that should have been locked. He then left wearing a dark blue shirt, khaki pants and white tennis shoes, and claiming to work for the Texas attorney general's office.

Authorities believe the clothes were the same that Thompson wore during his sentencing. Martin said Thompson somehow smuggled them back to his cell.

Prosecutors had accused Thompson of trying to hire hitmen to kill witnesses against him as well as members of Hayslip's family, and Martin said that members of Hayslip's family had been given police protection.

"There is no good way to spin this," he said. "The point is there were multiple errors on the part of our personnel. This is 100 percent human error that could have been prevented and it wasn't."

Cathy Lange, who served on a resentencing jury that recommended the death penalty for Thompson on Oct. 28, said she was terrified when she learned of Thompson's escape.

"He can make people believe he is the most innocent man in the world," Hayslip's mother, Wynona Donaghy, told the Houston Chronicle. "If somebody is helping him, they don't realize how dangerous he is."
