Buying Into Sexy: The Sexing Up Of Tweens
CBC, January 9th 2005
http://www.cbc.ca/consumers/market/f...exy/index.html

I was surfing on the site of CBC when I encountered this article. It's from a television programm broadcasted at CBC. It was an interesting read, not unfamiliar to me, although it even seems to me that things have changed in the last years. When I was 12 (6 years ago) sex was not as a big issue for us than for 12-year olds anno 2005 it seems. What is your opinion about this? Do you think this has gone too far, or not?

Western Attitudes should be divided into 3 difernt areas.
Europe, Canada and America.

Sex is open and fairly Liberal in Europe. Canada is moving up quick.

America has its head in the sand. They make it sound dirty, sinful etc. Bush wants abstinence in the classrooms. whatever.

Some of the stuff you see on City TV (baby blue movies) and shows like Osbourne's and Sopranos and even "Cold Squad" not ( cold case) the American FCC would have a fit. Imagine nudity on Broadcast channels in Prime time.We have them. USA does not, but do on "cable" down there. After the stink of "nipplegate" during last years Superbowl that FCC has become more paranoid than ever.

Then we have cable with shows as "Kink" "My first time" "sex files" "Trailer Boys"etc on the likes of Bravo and Showcase.

I may despise the CR-TC at times but it is a hell of a lot better than the American FCC. We dont have censorship like they do in America. The "F" word and like are common on the news now. I even heard a newscaster when he was quoting someone say "son of a bitch". It was not shocking and we don't have people protesting in the street that we have no morals.

This society is full of ... hypocrisy. God forbid we saw Janet Jackson's boob, but it's OK to use sex to sell to kids.

There's also responsability that lies with parent(s). I still believe that influence of one's family is stronger then the society's.

As soon as they start asking, Rick. We knew how it worked growing up...you kind of catch onto these things on the farm. It was no secret at all that Grandpa made the cows pregnant. (he was the AI tech for the area)

I don't think one can pick a numerical age. My oldest is 10 now. We've been talking a little bit on the subject already. The way my 4 year old is behaving, I should plan some time to talk to her next week.

I had to laugh at that. sorry. Been there. Have the bumper sticker to prove it too.

But your onto something. My daughters friend got her period in grade 5. She was 10yrs old! It could have been very scary for her if her mom had been different then she was. Her body developed but not her mind.

Very very scary.

[quote="TwilaBut your onto something. My daughters friend got her period in grade 5. She was 10yrs old! [/quote]

I came across a study a couple of years back while I was studying in college. The study cited how girls where beginning thier menstrual cycle at an earlier age on average. If I recall correctly, the mean age was fifteen, and had dropped to 13. I tried to google the study but couldn't find it.

I did however, find a reference to girls beginning at age 9. -- I actually came across this once. I'm a paramedic, and was called to a 9y/o who was symptomatic of her period. She lived with her father, who was obviously very concerned but nevertheless oblivious as to what was going on. (He wasn't expecting it for a few more years). To be honest, although my partner and I were suspicious of what it was, we didn't really know for sure until the nurse and the hospital confirmed it. Neither of us had heard of this happening at such an early age.

The world is changing extremely fast. As I understand it, the female bodey mistakes pollution for estrogen (I think I read that somewhere). Girls now are dressing and looking alot different then when I was a lad. Having said that, when I was a tween and younger I listened to music littered with sexual imagery (Motley Crue, and other heavy metal bands) watched Miami Vice and re-runs of the Dukes of Hazzard (Daisey Duke was hot) and had sex-ed in grade 6 (but they taught me nothing I didn't already know). It's up to parents to teach there kids. Why do they let there girls dress like hookers? It's not the medias fault. It parents. I realy dont think that there are more sexual imagery then say 15 years ago. It's parents not parenting. If they dont like the media, raise your kids.
