I think and I could be wrong here but I don't believe they inject milk cows with growth hormones. Beef, yes. Dairy cows are ready to produce after their first mating (just over 1yr of age?)

What's more disturbing is how they keep the cows producing milk. It's the same way that pharmecuetical companies keep horses pregnant to provide HRT for women. Disgusting!

They give growth hormones to chickens too. Not for bigger chickens but for quicker turnover.

Some in the US, they use it to make heifers mature faster but once they are producing there is no need. Most BGH comes from meat though.

I try to buy natural foods and Soy mild (mmmmm, soy) but I've noticed that organic and free range foods are always more expensive. This is where the public could help. If more people bought these foods then the prices would go down because they would be selling more and would be more competitive.

Seriously..if that is possible for me :P if you really want to understand some of the mind numbing business of youth, check of this site. It takes time to go through it all, but it is well worth it. Once you become aware of certain things, you can change them, at least for yourself, one person at a time adds up.

Look up the reproduction cycles of wild animals. Horses should be the easiest because they actually live wild. Not too many feral cows around.

It's a basic evolutionary strategy though, Twila...produce as many offspring as possible. The only thing that's been seriously modified for dairy cattle and PMU mares is breeding them all year around in rotation so they don't all dry up at once.

Most PMU mares are given a break every second time around too...at least if their owners are any good. That has to do with getting them out of diapers and letting them get some exercise though...urine collection isn't controlled like milking twice a day.

I learned all this as a kid, Twila. I haven't got a link for you or anything.
