The voters of decades past were different too. The left wanted higher taxes, but not necessarily higher spending, higher spending being conditional on more revenue to spend. The right of decades past wanted expenditures cut but not necessarily taxes and other revenues, revenues being expected to dovetail with the expenditure cuts.

Not so today. The right voter wants to see taxes cut come hell or high water, and the left has the same attitude towards expenditure increases. Any politician focused on winning an election will give the electorate what it wants. The problem here is not our politicians, but our voters.
