A Florida man was killed in a bizarre bicycling accident after he struck a turtle.

Cops say David Kervin, 51, was riding his motorized bicycle when he hit the resilient reptile in Indian Harbour Beach.

When Kervin hit the creature, he lost control of his bike and was thrown off. His body was found in a ditch. The injured turtle was several feet away.

“He apparently suffered a head injury and was already deceased when we arrived,” Don Walker, spokesman for Brevard County Fire Rescue, told Florida Today. “It appeared he hit the turtle."

Amazingly, the small box turtle survived the crash with nothing more than a small crack on its shell.

Investigators weren’t sure if Kervin - a waiter at a local yacht club - was wearing a helmet. He died of head trauma.

"It's tough," Bob Crissman, the general manager of the club, told the newspaper. "He was a server and all around good guy.”

Traffic investigators say turtle crashes are rare.
