well done Cher!

What’s happening in Flint, Michigan is beyond heartbreaking. Residents cannot drink their water due to lead contamination, but to add insult to injury, the water was originally declared safe. Then, as children began getting sick and the water was exposed as being toxic, government officials, including a slow to react Gov. Rick Snyder (R) finally thought they should do something about the toxic levels. To be blunt, what’s happening there is criminal, and someone needs to be held responsible. President Obama has even declared a state of emergency.

Stepping up big time to help the residents of Flint is none other than the legendary artist Cher. She has been very outspoken in her feelings about what’s been happening. Now, she’s not only voicing her opinion, but putting action to her words, she’s bringing fresh water to the people there who so desperately need it.

Partnering with natural spring water company Icelandic Glacial, Cher is donating 181,440 bottles of water to Flint. According to the press release:

“After reading about the catastrophic situation in Flint, a city of 100,000 people who have not had clean water in over a year, Cher contacted her friend Brad Horwitz, an investor in Icelandic Glacial, who reached out to the company’s Chairman and Co-Founder, Jon Olafsson, about Cher’s desire to purchase water for Flint’s residents. Icelandic Glacial committed to doubling Cher’s purchase which is being trucked in to Michigan beginning Monday, January 18th.

The water will reach The Food Bank of Eastern Michigan (www.fbem.org) beginning Wednesday, January 20th. FBEM will immediately begin the distribution process to those who need it most for drinking, cooking and washing. The water will go directly to community centers, food banks and fire houses focusing in on low income housing areas where 40% of Flint’s population is living below the poverty line. The bottles, once finished, will return to the food banks and will be recycled with money raised going right back into the food banks.”

Cher stated:

“This a tragedy of staggering proportion and shocking that it’s happening in the middle of our country. I am so grateful that Icelandic Glacial has come on-board to help the city of Flint. I cannot wait for the water to get there to help these people who have been poisoned because the water they’ve been getting out of their taps has been polluted for so long and remains that way without the state or the federal government stepping in with any substantial plan to resolve this problem.”

While this doesn’t solve Flint’s horrific water crisis, it will definitely be a welcomed effort and is sorely needed. The citizens of Flint have been poisoned, and in the most horrible way possible — by the people who are elected to work in their best interests. However, thanks to the efforts of Cher and Icelandic Glacial, fresh water is on the way.

What Cher Just Did For The Residents Of Flint, Michigan Is Absolutely Incredible «

Our 18-year old son was born in Flint, MI. The city was severely economically depressed then. Bless you, Cher.

Since the lead is all through the pipes it would be a good time to invest in some home filters that takes out all heavy metals.

Yes but they are damned expensive and need frequent changing I doubt the average inhabitant of Flint Michigan could manage a strict regimen of filtration for more than a few weeks.

Someone would start selling cut rate offshore made filters people would start being poisoned again and they wouldn't figure out what was happening until they started bleeding out of all their bodily orifices.

Muslims donate 30,000 bottles of water to Flint, Michigan, during water crisis

RAHAT HUSAIN: Muslims donate 30,000 bottles of water to Flint, Michigan, during water crisis - Washington Times

A Muslim organization called “Who is Hussain?” donated 30,000 bottles of water to the Red Cross in Flint, Michigan, on Sunday to help alleviate the water contamination crisis that has gripped the city for months. The donation drive came on the heels of President Obama’s declaration of the situation as a federal state of emergency.

Who is Hussain? collected the water after a local campaign collected donations of cases of water bottles and online donations netted funds to purchase additional water.

The city of Flint is located approximately one hour away by car from Dearborn, Michigan, the city with the highest population of Muslims by percentage in the United States. According to the 2000 US Census, the population of Dearborn was more than 29 percent Arab.

Dr. Aziza Askari, representative for the Michigan chapter of the Who is Hussain?, said, “We saw what needed to be done and we decided to do it. We reached out to schools, neighbors, friends, mosques, anyone and everyone to help us by donating a case of water, or money towards a case.”

Who is Hussain? was inspired by the story of an early Islamic leader, Imam Hussain ibn Ali, the grandson of Islam’s Prophet Muhammad. Hussain ibn Ali complained early on about growing violence and extremism in the Muslim community, but was brutally killed after being denied water for several days. Adherents of Hussain’s teachings believe that the denial of water under any circumstances is an unconscionable crime, and actively promote water distribution campaigns on a regular basis. On the anniversary of Hussain’s death, they themselves forsake food and water for most of the day as a type of remembrance.

“Prophet Mohammed taught us ‘Your neighbor comes before your own household.’ As a resident of Detroit this is not only a Flint problem this is a Michigan problem and I feel obligated to help to the best of my ability.” said Mohammed Almawla, a local filmmaker and volunteer for the organization.

Flint has been the site of growing issues with water contamination, after the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) allegedly ignored months of reports of water quality issues and fought with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) over water quality treatments. The EPA was also criticized for failing to prevent the problem.

Another Michigan native and filmmaker, Michael Moore, called for the arrest of Gov. Rick Snyder. Mr. Moore also called for President Obama to visit Flint to survey the problem, criticizing the president if he failed to do so.

“We’re taking every action within reason, and going beyond reason to address this,” said Gov. Snyder in response to scrutiny, according to the Detroit Free Press. “This is something you wish that never happened, and let’s see that it never happens again in the state of Michigan.”

many claim to follow. Perhaps they fail to read so they don't know what to follow.

ROs are cheap.
POU systems are a last resort. In this case, it's a lot cheaper to deal with the problem at the municipal level

I think one of the problems we have today is the inability to adapt to the increasing complexity of the systems we are creating. I don't hold the politicians responsible for these types of gong shows. We need to do a much better job at determining where authority and responsibility begin and end. It should not always be at the presidents/governors/premiers/prime ministers office.

Pearl Jam has jumped on board in the aid to help Flint with its water crisis.

On Friday, the rock band pledged $125,000 to the United Way of Genesee County, according to a release from the band’s management.

Additionally, a network of the group’s friends and partners — including Live Nation, the group’s record label Republic Records, Universal Music Publishing Group, William Morris Endeavor Entertainment, Glaser Progress Foundation, Brandi Carlile’s Looking Out Foundation and the group’s one-time foes Ticketmaster — chipped in an additional $175,000, bringing the total donation to $300,000.

The band has also launched a CrowdRise campaign for fans to donate money to Flint through the website crowdrise.com/pearljam.

Funds will go toward the United Way of Genesee County’s Flint Water Fund, which aids in both the short- and long-term needs of the Flint community.

Earlier this week, Big Sean also launched a CrowdRise campaign to help those in Flint.

As the infrastructure crumbles, there will be lots more "Flints". The greater Detroit area is at the cutting edge of collapse but there are plenty more near here to follow, like Rochester, Toledo, Milwaukee, Niagara Falls,

Since the lead is all through the pipes it would be a good time to invest in some home filters that takes out all heavy metals.

Appears the water is too toxic for filters.

And let's not forget that the Snyder clan didn't let people know what was going on with their water......

After lead poisoned the drinking water in Flint, residents received filters they were told would make their tap water safe. Now, tests over the last 24 hours are showing that lead levels in some homes are still too high for a filter to handle.

At a press conference this evening, Mayor Karen Weaver delivered the statement alongside representatives from the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, which administered the testing. She encouraged residents to have their water tested immediately before using filters.

Some filters, specifically gravity-fed ones
certified by the National Sanitation Foundation, are able to remove reasonable amounts of lead from drinking water, up to about 150 parts per billion. What Flint is seeing, however, are some levels higher than 150 parts per billion—in other words, what can safely be removed by those filters. Some tests showed levels as high as 4000 parts per billion.

This means that the “reliable” water source from Lake Huron is now not safe anymore due to the way the Flint River water heavily corroded the city’s pipes. Test kits are now being distributed so residents can continue to monitor their water and know when it’s safe to go back to the tap—
if it ever will be. The New York Times published a devastating story on how doctors are working to evaluate the damage done to children under age five.

Meanwhile,
Congress has proposed $400 million in federal aid which could help replace the city’s lead pipes.
