Trudeau condemns pepper spray attack on Syrian refugees in Vancouver

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is condemning an attack on Syrian refugees in Vancouver, after police say a man pepper-sprayed a group at a welcoming event.

Officers say the incident happened outside of the Muslim Association of Canada Centre, just after 10:30 p.m. on Friday.

The centre was holding a "Welcome Night" for refugees that evening, and a crowd of people were gathered outside when an unknown man approached on a bicycle.

The man then pepper-sprayed the group of men, women and children, a police press release says.

Witnesses at the scene said the man sprayed as many as 15 to 30 people.

"I saw people running out of the centre and crying and coughing," a witness named Fatima told CTV Vancouver. "I (could) smell the black pepper. And it did hurt, of course."

Paramedics arrived on scene to treat those hit by the spray. They said nobody was seriously injured.

On Saturday, Trudeau responded to the incident on Twitter.

"I condemn the attack on Syrian refugees in Vancouver," the prime minister wrote. "This isn't who we are – and doesn't reflect the warm welcome Canadians have offered."

I condemn the attack on Syrian refugees in Vancouver. This isn't who we are - and doesn't reflect the warm welcome Canadians have offered.

Police are now looking for the man on the bicycle, who is believed to have been wearing a white hooded sweatshirt at the time of the event.

Officers say the motive for the pepper-spraying is unknown at this time, and that no arrests have been made so far.

Gee I guess there are lots of Canadians not thrilled at the idea of Syrian refugees coming to Canada... btw, the big fella doesn't look like a woman or child. I will say this is not a correct to deal with this, I would advocate getting into politics to make changes.

"They don't know the motive behind the attack" - then how do they know its a hate crime?

By whom? Anyone who obeys the law of the land and can support themselves is fine by me. There are some matters where it's best just to M.Y.O.B. and that goes for religion too as long as they don't try to ram it down anyone's throat. Canadians by and large aren't a hateful race.

What a fool, this young boy Trudeau looks like right now.

Politics aside that was a totally ignorant act. You don't treat other human beings that way when they are not causing any harm.

What in saying is, many Canadians don't want them here. I'd go as low as 25% of the population wants them here. This was very predictable. And note acts like this will continue to happen in the future. The majority of Canadians don't want these Islamists here.

Justin is a fool to think the majority of Canadians want 50 000 Islamist a year from the hart of Isis lands to immigrate to our homes. It's the dumbest idea ever.

Let's open our doors to people who live where the most craziest religious fascists extremist the world has ever know live. Great idea Justin.

What a stupid innocent dummy .

I can understand that..............I think he's bringing them in too fast, I'd be more in favour of bringing in 100 at a time and getting them settled, employed and paying taxes before bringing another bunch. But regardless you don't take it out on the refugees once they are here. If that A$$hole had an ounce of class he'd have personally escorted them down to the boat and seen them on their way. What he did was chicken sh*t and cowardly.................no class whatsoever.

I know, I agree. The act was un-kind. But I was anticipating this kind of reaction. It's what happens when you force something on someone who doesn't want something.

Trudeau will be out as fast as he came , with decisions like these.

Now the Van police is calling this a hate crime.

How pepper spraying a bunch of people can suddenly become a Hate crime, with no evidence whatsoever, is totally beyound me.

It sounds even the police have totally lost their sense of justice when it comes to these refugees. Sheesh!!

FWIW-That's a lousy neighbourhood-some decent restaurants and general working class housing but some of the basement dwellers there aren't the kind you want to meet in a dark alley.

Barbaric is to harsh a word to describe FGM.
