Turkey downs Russian military aircraft near Syria’s border

BEIRUT — Turkish military aircraft shot down a Russian jet Tuesday after Turkey says it violated its airspace near the border with Syria, a major escalation in the Syrian conflict that could further strain relations between Russia and the West since Turkey is a NATO member.

Russian officials confirmed that a Russian Su-24 warplane, one of more than three dozen fixed-wing aircraft flying sorties in Syria as part of Russia’s two-month old bombing campaign there, had been shot down but insisted it had not violated Turkish airspace.

Turkey’s military said, however, that the Russian jet was warned multiple times before it was shot down by two F-16 fighter jets.

Instead of downing allied fighter jets who are fighting ISIS, maybe the Turks - who wish to be members of the EU, remember - should do something about the Islamism endemic in their society and punish those football fans who chanted "Allahu Akbar!" during the two minutes' silence in honour of the Paris victims before their game against Greece. Otherwise they will never be accepted into Western society by being allowed into the EU.

I guess this supersonic bombers that circled Europe before dropping their loads is a bit out of NATO's league.

The circumstances of the plane's crash are under investigation. The Russian Ministry of Defense notes that during the flight the plane stayed strictly within Syrian airspace and the flight was logged," the statement read.
Two Turkish residents were injured by falling debris from the downed Russian bomber, Ulusal TV channel reports.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has bitterly condemned the downing of a Russian jet on the Turkey-Syria border.

He described it as a "stab in the back" committed by "accomplices of terrorists".

Turkey says its jets shot at the plane after warning that it was violating Turkish airspace. But Moscow says it never strayed from Syrian airspace.

Nato is to hold an extraordinary meeting to discuss the incident at Turkey's request.

Mr Putin warned there would be "serious consequences" for Moscow's relations with Turkey.

He said the Su-24 was hit by air-to-air missiles fired by Turkish F-16s while it was flying over Syrian territory.

President Putin said the plane had been attacked "at a height of 6,000 metres (20,000ft), 1km from the border".

It crashed into Syrian territory 4km from the border, he added.

The two crew members ejected as their burning aircraft plunged into a Syrian hillside. Video footage has shown what appears to be the dead body of one of the flyers, surrounded by armed rebels.

"In any case, our pilots, planes did not threaten Turkish territory in any way. It is quite clear," Mr Putin said.

"They were carrying out an operation against Isis [Islamic State] in the mountains of northern Latakia, where militants are focused - who mostly originate from the territory of Russia.

"So they were carrying the key task of preventative attacks against those who could return to Russia at any time. These are people who must be directly qualified as international terrorists."
