A camper at a popular beach on Queensland's Sunshine Coast has described the terrifying speed with which a sinkhole swallowed a car, caravan and camping trailer.

The sinkhole that opened up at the Inskip Point camping area near Rainbow Beach around 11pm on Saturday is now estimated to be 200 metres long.

Geotechnical engineers have completed an initial assessment and will conduct further inspections on Monday.

The Department of National Parks, Sport and Racing is urging people to avoid the area, observe traffic barriers and warning signs.

Camper Melanie Wotherspoon described her horror in a Facebook post.

'Yep, can't believe we made it out,' Ms Wotherspoon wrote.

'I thought we were gonners for sure, was truly scary how fast it came into our camp site and swallowed it up.'

A woman ran through nearby campsites, screaming at people to wake up and get out, the ABC reports.

Police and SES crews raced to the site, where no one was reported injured or missing.

It's believed up to 300 people were evacuated from the area and others were warned to pack up and get ready to leave.

The hole could be linked to a number of small earthquakes in the region in recent weeks.

In 2011 a similar sinkhole emerged at the same campsite, again with no injuries.

Place looks like a giant sandbar anyway. They are known to move fast during a quake. Especially with a little tidal action.

It looks like a fresh portal to the underworld.

Just thought that I'd add a scientific explanation to the thread.

A massive sinkhole has opened up on a residential street in St Albans, forcing the evacuation of several families from their homes in the night.

The 66ft (20m) diameter hole spreads across a front garden and driveway on Fontmell Close and is 33ft (10m) deep.

Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service said at least 10 people were taken to an evacuation centre set up at nearby nightclub Batchwood Hall.
