I assume that the cartoon character was based on him?

Cool. Ranger Smith can take a few days off now.
Our sympathies for poor Booboo.

WAIT! Oooohh, not THE Yogi Bear. Whew.

Our sympathies to the Berras and their friends and fans.

He was a Newfie?
FUnny thing, I have a friend in NC and she says things like "Raise the window down" to close it and "Turn the lightswitch on off" to shut off the lights. I asked her if she was a Newfie, too. lol

he also played for montreal royals as well didn't he!?

I don't believe so as they were a Brooklyn Dodgers minor league affiliate.

While he had been signed by Branch Rickey for St Louis (Yogi's birth place) his contract was sold or traded to the Yankees and he played for the Newark Bears who played some of their toughest games against the Royals.

We in my family had been huge fans of Yogi - one of MLB's true icons.

While he was well known throughout the USA (we had numerous tributes to him here in Gopherland today) he was not well known internationally. I mentioned his name on a European sports chat this morning and nobody recognized the name.

One thing's for sure - his great legend will never be over!
