FDA 'Female Viagra' Pill Flibanserin Near Approval

A US regulatory panel has recommended approving the first drug on the market designed to boost female libido.

After two previous rejections, an advisory board to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) concluded the agency should give the go-ahead to Flibanserin, which has been dubbed the "female Viagra".

The pink little pill works on the brain unlike Viagra, which affects blood flow to the genitals.

But Flibanserin, which is aimed at pre-menopausal women, also can have side effects including nausea, dizziness and sleepiness.

The FDA usually follows the recommendation of its advisory panels, though it is not obliged to do so.

The drug's developer, Sprout Pharmaceuticals, has been backed by advocacy groups in charging the FDA with gender bias for withholding approval of Flibanserin, which the agency denies.
