With the Eurovision Song Contest now just over 24 hours away, Britain is once again preparing to go into battle with France, Germany and other Continental rivals.

Few fans expect UK hopeful 'Electro Velvet' to break Britain's dire run of results going back almost 20 years.

But there is one European competition where Britain is the clear winner: creating jobs. New figures have revealed more Britons us are getting into work than anywhere else in Europe.

Last year the number of people in work in the UK grew by 611,000 – outstripping any other country in Europe by 200,000 jobs

Last year the number of people in work in the UK grew by 611,000 – outstripping any other country in Europe by 200,000 jobs.

Overall, Britain accounted for 20 per cent of the entire increase in employment across the EU last year.

Outside of the UK only Spain, Germany and Poland saw more than 300,000 extra jobs created. In France the number of people in work fell by 2,000.

In Britain, more than 300,000 jobs went to women alone – more than any other EU country.

The rise in young Brits finding work was also more than the rest of the EU put together.

The UK now has a record employment rate of 73.5 per cent, with the figure for men even higher at 78.4 per cent

In 2014, some 109,000 extra young people found work, compared to just 10,000 in the other 27 states combined.

At the same time, wages for 18-21 year olds grew by eight per cent in 2014 – way ahead of inflation.

Britain's jobs boom has seen unemployment drop to the second-lowest level in Europe – behind only Germany.

If the UK's employment rate was as bad as some of the other countries in Europe there would be up to six million more people out of work, the government has claimed.

In Spain just 57 per cent of people are in work – while in Italy the situation is even worse, with 56 per cent in employment.

Employment Minister, Priti Patel told MailOnline the Government was determined to stay ahead of the EU when it came to boosting employment.

She said: 'We're creating a better and more prosperous future for Britain with a record number of people in employment and more women in work than ever before.

'This Government will continue to foster the conditions businesses need to create jobs, so that we move towards full employment and stay ahead of our friends across the Channel.

'It's about giving everyone in our country the chance to get on, with the dignity of a job and the and peace of mind that comes from being able to support their family.'

During the election David Cameron pledged to create the highest employment rate in the developed world.

The Prime Minister said the coalition’s biggest success story had been the creation of 1,000 jobs every day it had been in power, despite the struggle to turn the economy around after the financial crisis.

Over another five years, he claimed the Tories would help business to create another two million – on top of the 1.9million created since 2010.

The number of people who are out of work is now at its lowest level for seven years, with more than 31million in a job - the highest level since records began in 1971.
