RCMP arrest 10 Montrealers suspected of trying to join jihadist groups

RCMP said they have arrested 10 Montreal youth suspected of trying to join jihadist groups overseas.

The young people were arrested at Pierre Elliott Trudeau Airport in Montreal over the weekend, the RCMP said in a news release late Tuesday.

No charges have been laid, but police confiscated the passports of all 10 people, Mounties said.

Police said the investigation is ongoing and are not releasing the youths' identities or any information that led to their arrests.

Police said investigators have met with the families of the suspects.

"These are very difficult times for the relatives and loved ones of the persons arrested, as the decision to leave the country was not that of the family, but of a single family member. As a result, family members often find themselves at a complete loss and unable to understand the decision made by the youth," RCMP said.

Police said its Integrated National Security Enforcement Team made the arrests.

Public Safety Minister Steven Blaney in a statement refused to comment on the arrests specifically, but commended the RCMP and the team for their "continued vigilance in keeping our streets and communities safe from the ongoing global terror threat."

"The international jihadist movement has declared war on Canada. We will not sit on the sidelines but instead join our allies to degrade and defeat ISIS," he said.
