Today is the Queen's 89th birthday, which she is to celebrate privately at home at Windsor Castle.

Her Majesty, who has been staying at the castle for the past month, has no official engagements listed.

In her honour, the King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery will stage a 41-gun royal salute.

The salute will follow a selection of celebratory music from the Band of the Royal Artillery close to the firing position in Hyde Park.

Though Her Majesty's actual birthday is 21 April, her official birthday is 12 June.

The birthday comes as people begin to gather outside St Mary's Hospital in London in anticipation of the birth of the Queen's newest great-grandchild. The baby, which bookies believe will be a blonde girl called Alice, who will be fourth in line to the Throne, is due on Saturday.

The Queen will celebrate her 89th birthday privately at Windsor Castle today.

In her honour, the King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery will stage a 41-gun royal salute.

The birthday comes as people begin to gather outside St Mary's Hospital in London in anticipation of the birth of the Queen's newest great-grandchild.

The Duchess of Cambridge is expected to give birth to her and Prince William's second child there later this month, with some fans already waiting as long as two weeks outside the hospital.

Kensington Palace said Prince William was now on unpaid leave until June after completing the first phase of his in-work air ambulance helicopter pilot training sooner than expected.

A palace spokesperson said he would return to work after a period of pre-planned official royal engagements in late May.

Prince Harry will also briefly return to the UK this weekend, following the Gallipoli commemorations in Turkey, to attend the London Marathon as patron of the London Marathon Charitable Trust.

The King's Troop - in full dress uniform - will ride their horses and gun carriages past Buckingham Palace at midday en route to Hyde Park where they will stage their gun salute using six 13-pounder Field Guns dating from around the time of the First World War.

An hour later, the Honourable Artillery Company will fire a 62-gun royal salute from the river bank at the Tower of London, overlooking HMS Belfast.

Salutes round UK

Three L118 Ceremonial Light Guns, similar to those used in Afghanistan in recent years, will be used to fire the salute across the Thames.

There will also be gun salutes at Edinburgh Castle, Cardiff Castle, and Hillsborough Castle in County Down.

The basic Royal salute is 21 rounds. A further 20 are fired at royal parks and royal palaces and fortresses and another 21 for being in the City of London.

Kensington Palace also said Prince William had completed the first phase of his air ambulance pilot training

Princess Elizabeth Alexandra Mary was born at 0240 GMT on 21 April, 1926 at the Mayfair home of her mother's parents, the Earl and Countess of Strathmore (a restaurant now stands on the site).

Though Her Majesty's actual birthday is 21 April, her official birthday is 12 June.

The tradition of two birthdays dates back to the time when, if monarchs were born in winter, the weather was deemed unsuitable for outdoor events.

In Britain, the Queen's official birthday is traditionally marked by the Trooping the Colour ceremony in Horse Guards Parade, which this year will take place on Saturday 13 June.

Kate Middleton's second baby expected to generate £80 million for economy immediately after being born, which could rise to £150m a year if it's a girl because of the boost to the fashion industry.

Bookies say the new baby, due at the weekend, will be a Princess Alice and will have blonde hair.

Apparently, William wants a girl and Catherine wants a boy.

The Duke of Cambridge is hoping his second child will be a girl, and he is not alone: a baby princess could be worth a billion pounds to the economy over her lifetime, retail experts have suggested, with the first £80m coming within days of the birth.

Prince George’s birth two years ago boosted the economy by £247m, and while the levels of excitement are lower this time around, a sister for him would bring in far more cash in the long term.

Professor Joshua Bamfield, director of the Centre for Retail Research, said a royal princess could bring in up to £150m to the British economy, with fashion retailers the main beneficiaries.

He said: “I think there will be an immediate boost of around £80m when the baby is born, with around £20-£25m spent on souvenirs and the rest on food and drink such as cake and sparkling wine. There isn’t as much excitement when it’s the second baby, but a girl would have the potential to boost the fashion industry.

Prince George's birth on 22 July 2013 brought £247 million extra to the economy

“As well as the boost to baby clothing sales that we have seen from Prince George, a Princess would be able to set trends throughout her life, which will be great for the people who designed her clothes or those who can make quick knock-off copies.

“It might even provide the impetus for people to start up whole new companies.”

The Royal Collection Trust has already announced it will sell an official range of royal baby souvenirs, likely to include plates and cups, through its gift shops in royal palaces and online. Other companies, including the pottery firm Emma Bridgewater, are working on their own commemorative mugs and souvenirs.

The Duke of Cambridge told well-wishers before the birth of Prince George that he was hoping for a girl but the Duchess of Cambridge wanted a boy.

If the baby is born today it will share its birthday with the Queen, who is 89. Her Majesty is spending the day celebrating quietly with her family at Windsor Castle after giving herself a rare week off from public engagements.

Her Majesty will still go through her daily quota of government red boxes, as she does every day except Christmas Day, but will otherwise be able to relax with the Duke of Edinburgh as she enters her 90th year.

The Prince of Wales, the Duke of York and the Earl of Wessex have also kept their diaries free, suggesting they may join her for a birthday celebration at some point during the day.

She could even receive a visit from her great-grandson, Prince George, if the Duchess of Cambridge is feeling well enough to make the trip, or of the Duke of Cambridge has a day off from his air ambulance pilot training.

oh for sure there will be some big events planned here as well...

I can't wait for her 100th birthday in 2026 (if she reaches it). That'll be something. No British or Canadian monarch has ever reached their 100th birthday. She'll have to send herself a telegram.

Could be- I'm not all that savvy on what is "King material" having never been one! :) :)

Charles is "king material" because he's the first born child of the current monarch. That's the first way of determining "king material" and it takes precedence over all other ways.

Well, I'm with you 50%. But I think it would be nice if he could also be useful! :) :)

Doesnt really make a difference who a figure head in a ceremonial role is. Her, him, Joe Blow - anyone.

Usefulness and decorum might be two desired attributes. :)
