Death toll in Yemen rises as Saudi-led military attacks continue

SANAA, Yemen — An airstrike from a Saudi-led military force destroyed a dairy plant along Yemen’s Red Sea coast, killing more than two dozen people Wednesday in another possible boost to the civilian death toll from mounting attacks seeking to target Shiite rebels, officials and witnesses said.
The details of the reported hit on a factory in the port of Hodeidah could not be immediately confirmed. But the dairy facility is near a military base that also was targeted by airstrikes that began late Tuesday.
A local official in Hodeidah, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to brief reporters, told The Washington Post that more than 25 workers were killed in either the airstrike or the fire that later engulfed the building. Other reports gave higher death tolls. Agence France-Presse, citing local officials, said at least 37 people were killed and 80 wounded, which would place the attack among the single bloodiest incidents for possible civilian casualties in Yemen since the airstrikes began last week.
It follows accounts by aid groups of increasing civilian deaths in the week-long air campaign led by Saudi Arabia to drive back Shiite rebels believed backed by Iran. Saudi Arabia and Arab partners seek to reinstate President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi, who fled Yemen last week to escape a rebel advance on his compound in Aden, the country’s second-largest city.
