BREAKING: Two police officers reportedly were shot early Thursday outside the police department in Ferguson, Mo. amid protests that followed the resignation of the town's police chief.

The shooting was first reported by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Ferguson Police Lt. Col. Al Eickhoff told the paper that he did not believe the officers were from his department and had no information on the extend of their injuries. The Post-Dispatch reported, citing a police source, that one of the officers was from St. Louis County, while the other was from Webster Groves, another St. Louis suburb located south of Ferguson.

KTVI reported that as many as 200 protesters had gathered outside the police station to demand more changes in the city's government after the resignation of Police Chief Tom Jackson Wednesday afternoon. The station reported that at least one person had been arrested and that protesters were blocking traffic on nearby Florissant Road.

The Associated Press reported that the crowd had appeared to be dwindling when the shots were heard. The Missouri Highway Patrol told the AP that troopers were heading to the scene.

Jackson was the sixth Ferguson employee to resign or be fired after a Justice Department report cleared white former officer Darren Wilson of civil rights charges in the shooting of black 18-year-old Michael Brown this past August, but found a profit-driven court system and widespread racial bias in the city police department.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

The vertical axis shows black / white arrest ratios in log scale. The horizontal axis shows the ranking of municipalities from 1st to 3538th.

The red dot represents notoriously “anomalous” Ferguson.

When one group, blacks, make up the majority of the inner city and create most of the crime, then it is racist to note that and to arrest and charge them? Any other group that instantly riots and loots with no more reason than a fake police incident? Anyone dense enough to blame the whites for that?

Obama hasn't been the great uniter so many people thought he was going to be. Perhaps that's because it was necessary for him to get massive black voter turnout by stoking their fears and anger. What we're seeing in places like Ferguson is the fruit of Obama's efforts.

You have to laugh at the BBC.

In its news report this morning it first told us that "Ferguson is an overwhelmingly black area."

And then in the very next sentence it reported, with genuine shock and horror, that "86% of people arrested by the police in Ferguson last year were black!"

Believe it or not... I heard that report on the BBC this morning as well.

I liked how the lady put it.... "They can get a ticket for improperly going through a traffic light."

Yeah... in the US we call it running a red light.... and that will get you a ticket every time regardless of color.

Now that he's been arrested, he must be guilty. And if he's found not guilty, or charges are never filed, or the charges are dismissed, it'll be "guilty man got off on a 'technicality.'"

Robert McCulloch: "Essentially what we’ve charged him with is firing shots. It’s possible at this point that he was firing shots at someone other than the police, but struck the police officers. So the charge is still assault in the first degree, and they’re class-A felonies for striking those two officers. There was a weapon recovered, which has been tied to the shell casings that were recovered there, the weapon recovered from him, and he has acknowledged his participation in firing the shots or his — that in fact he did fire the shots that struck the two officers."
Williams was identified with public help. McCulloch described him as a protester, but several Ferguson activists say he did not take part in the demonstrations.
