Just an hour or so ago, one of the tallest residential towers in the world, the 79-story Marina Torch Tower in Dubai, made good on its namesake and burst into flames. A fire which, according to the BBC, was caused by a cigarette butt.

According to the BBC, the fire seemed to start around the 50th floor, and one witness claimed that "there was debris flying everywhere, falling into neighboring buildings."

Users have been posting pictures of the disaster on Twitter and Instagram in droves. And while it is currently around 4am in Dubai, at least so far, there have been no reported injuries. Several people are being treated for smoke inhalation. Quote:

Emergency crews are apparently on the scene, but a current sandstorm may have been making the situation worse.

The fire is still ongoing, and we will update this post as more information becomes available.

It either doesn't have them, they weren't done right or they weren't operational.
ssssssssssssssssssssso what's gonna happen...I can't believe that a building that huge built in Dubai wouldn't have adequate fire protection, they build massive buildings constantly

that building can't come to the ground and who is going to cover all of that money lost?

all of those lives altered?

Who knows what the building codes are like there. Insurance will cover it. Go after the smoker I say. Take 100 off each paycheck for the next million years

sprinkler systems are generally designed for life safety and containment so people can evacuate. They are glorified plumbing good at keeping a small fire in check until the fire department gets there, but if it gets outside that initial phase they're just pissing in the wind.

wish we had a firefighter on the board to help us with these conundrums at times.
