Five people have been injured after a double-decker bus had its roof ripped off on a busy shopping street in central London today.

Scotland Yard and Transport for London (TfL) have both launched investigations into the collision, which saw the roof of the bus being flipped over backwards and left "hanging by a thread".

Immediately, pictures of the scene in Kingsway were posted on Twitter. The bus was a number 91, which runs between Crouch End and Trafalgar Square.

Witness Alex Beattie said: "Saw it happen. Hit a tree and roof peeled right off. Everyone seemed ok. Police car next to it when it happened."

Five people have been injured after a double-decker bus had its roof ripped off on a busy shopping street in central London on Monday.

At the scene, London Fire Brigade (LFB) station manager Gary Squires said: "Five people have been treated by the London Ambulance Service for minor injuries and two of them have been taken to hospital.

"Those involved are very lucky to have escaped serious injury."

A nearby tree near the corner of Sardinia Street also appeared to be damaged, and was left leaning across the road. The area was evacuated and the roads cordoned off while the bus roof was being removed from the road.

An LFB spokesman said: "The bus was travelling southbound down Kingsway when it hit a tree which has taken the roof off.

"The tree is still standing, but it is damaged as well, some bark has been taken away. The bus roof was hanging on by a thread, so we used a winch to lift it off."

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: "We are investigating the incident. Enquiries are under way to ascertain the circumstances of the collision."

A London Ambulance Service worker Chris Hawkswell said on Twitter: "We have an ambulance, duty officer & @LAS_CycleTeam at the Kingsway RTC assessing 2 patients with minor injuries, luckily no one else hurt."

Transport for London's travel alert service tweeted that Kingsway was closed southbound "due to a collision".

Ken Davidson, TfL’s Head of Bus Operations, said: “At around 1pm today (2 February) a route 91 bus, operated by Metroline, collided with a tree on Kingsway at the junction with Portugal Street (WC2).

"Emergency services attended the scene and there will be a full investigation into this incident.”
