Airdrie, Alberta teen caught driving 182 km/hr in an 80 zone

The Airdrie Integrated Traffic Unit caught a local teenager driving at more than 100 km/hr over the speed limit on a narrow road.

According to a statement from police, the 17-year-old sped past police conducting speed enforcement on Range Road 11, about two kilometres north of Highway 566, on Wednesday morning.

Police say a newer model Hyundai Genesis was going 182 km/hr in a zone where the posted speed limit is only 80 km/hr.

Police say the teen had his girlfriend in the car with him.

"This young man is lucky the officer was there," said Corp. Darrin Turnbull in a statement. "Crashing at that speed could have been catastrophic."

"The faster you drive, the harder you hit."

The teen was issued a mandatory court appearance for traffic court in Airdrie and police say his mother was notified.
