Greg Rutherford Carries Injured Deer Home

British Olympian Greg Rutherford handed Doris over to an animal hospital after finding her with a broken leg.

Olympian Greg Rutherford has revealed the sad ending of the story of an injured deer he carried home in an attempt to help it.

The long-jump record holder came across the injured deer while out walking his dogs near his home in Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire.

"Just carried an injured deer about two miles home and now awaiting the RSPCA to come and help the little fella. Poor thing has a broken leg," the 28-year-old winner of gold at the London 2012 Olympics told his Twittter followers.

The RSPCA said it was likely to have to put the deer down because of its broken leg so Rutherford decided to contact another local animal hospital.

By now, the deer had a name - Doris - and Rutherford was hopeful that it could be helped to recovery.

The TiggyWinkles animal hospital went to the house, put the deer's leg in a splint and took it away.

But, sadly, Doris was too severely hurt to save and she was put down.

Head nurse at the practice, Clare Campbell, told the Mirror the deer had been suffering from "horrific" pelvic injuries.

"We are still happy she was rescued because otherwise she would have taken days to die in agony in the wild.

"At least we were able to give her pain relief and keep her warm and dry."

Rutherford tweeted his disappointment. "Really sad day today. Doris the injured deer I brought home yesterday had to be put to sleep due to her injuries."
