4chan: Controversial Website's Founder Quits

As well as hugely popular internet memes, the forum is notorious for its graphic and hateful content and links to hackers.

The founder of the anarchic online message board 4chan has said he is retiring as its administrator.

Christopher Poole launched the site, which lets users post messages and photos anonymously, in 2003 when he was 15 years old.

Its forums have been the birthplace of some of the most popular pranks and internet memes of the past decade, including lolcats and Rickrolling.

But 4chan has become notorious, too, for its graphic content, trolling, the hacker who boasted of targeting Sarah Palin's email, Gamergate and the recent leak of photos of nude celebrities such as Jennifer Lawrence.

It also gave rise to the hacktivist collective Anonymous.

Poole, known on the site as "Moot", said in a post on Wednesday on 4chan's news blog that a team of volunteers would take over from him.

"As 4chan's sole administrator, decision maker, and keeper of most of its institutional knowledge, I've come to represent an uncomfortably large single point of failure," he wrote.

Since its launch, 1.7 billion posts have been published on 4chan, garnering over 42 billion page views, with more than 1.2 million daily visitors, according to Poole.

Despite its popularity, he has always maintained that he never made any money from it and struggled to pay the bills.

"The journey has been marked by highs and lows, surprises and disappointments, but ultimately immense satisfaction," Poole wrote of 4chan.

"I'm humbled to have had the privilege of both founding and presiding over what is easily one of the greatest communities to ever grace the Web."

The site's "random", or "/b/", subsection has attracted the most infamy.
