Protesters want to wreck Will and Kate’s NBA game

Protesters are plotting a “Royal Shutdown” at the Barclays Center on Monday night while Prince William and Duchess Kate attend their first NBA basketball game.

At 7:30 p.m., the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will watch LeBron James and his Cavaliers take on the hometown Brooklyn Nets — but it could be marred by civil unrest as agitators plan to meet outside the arena an hour before tipoff.

Twitter hashtags reading “Shut it Down” and “RoyalShutdown” have been attached to a memo and distributed through social media by user Justice League NYC, a group that describes themselves as a social initiative of Harry Belafonte’s “Gathering for Justice” organization.

People quickly rallied around the planned protest and began spreading the message online.

“Yes, it’s cold. That doesn’t halt the fight for freedom. There’s strength in # s so join @NYjusticeleague tonite. Barclay’s #RoyalShutDown,” tweeted @FeministaJones.

“It should be interesting to see if NYPD protects the royals as well as they did the Rockefeller tree lighting. #RoyalShutDown,” wrote Kaycee Nightfire.

An event page titled “Barclay’s Stadium, SHUT IT DOWN” has surfaced on Facebook, where 147 people have RSVP’d.
“Foreign dignitaries are going to be at Barclay’s Center,” a description reads. “So lets shut it (and the mall and Atlantic and Flatbush) down. Come out strong for the first day of the week of outrage.”

But some Twitter users couldn’t understand why the agitators would try to throw a wrench into Will and Kate’s plans during their first visit to the Big Apple.

“Hey #royalshutdown, you’re not helping protesting people that did absolutely nothing to you. All you’re doing is successfully being mean,” tweeted Alexandra VanErven.

“I don’t understand why #royalshutdown and curious,” wrote Gabriel Feinstein. “Is it for media attention during #RoyalVisitUSA?”

But another protest may come from inside the arena — James said Sunday it was “possible” he would wear an “I can’t breathe” Eric Garner T-shirt during warmups Monday night, the Associated Press reported.

Chicago Bulls point guard Derrick Rose donned the shirt Saturday before playing the Golden State Warriors.
