EAST ST. LOUIS • Police are seeking a "person of interest" after a body was found Monday in the trunk of a car that was on fire in East St. Louis.
Authorities said they are trying to locate a Missouri man, Hairl T. Johnson, 43, and asked for the public's help in finding him, but did not describe Johnson as a suspect.
The St. Clair County coroner's office said Thursday morning that the victim was Antonio Jones, 43, of Ferguson. The coroner said the fire didn't kill Jones; he died after being shot twice in the abdomen.
The Major Case Squad is investigating the death. Police say the car, a Buick, had Missouri registration and multiple owners in Missouri.
East St. Louis police said a burning vehicle was reported about 3 p.m. Monday on railroad tracks near 18th Street and Broadway. After firefighters put out the fire, they found the body in the trunk of the car.
Authorities asked anyone with information in the case or about Johnson's location to call the Major Case Squad at 618-274-5434.
