Authorities recovered the body of a 6-year-old boy floating in an Oregon marina on Monday night just hours after his mother told police she threw him from a nearby bridge, police said.
Jillian McCabe, 34, called police around 6:25 p.m. local time saying she had tossed her son London from the Yaquina Bay Bridge in the coastal city of Newport, the city's police department said in a statement.
The body was spotted in the water near the Embarcadero Resort, about a mile from the bridge, roughly four hours later, police said.
The statement did not mention any motive.
McCabe, who was found by police at the bridge earlier, was arrested and charged with aggravated murder, murder and first degree manslaughter, police said. She is being held on $750,000 bail.
The U.S. Coast Guard assisted in the hours-long search, sending two boats and a helicopter, said Coast Guard spokesman Petty Office Third Class Jonathan Klingenberg. He added that a diner at a nearby restaurant spotted the body. Newport is a city of some 10,000 roughly 115 miles (185 km) southwest of Portland.

I dont know whats surprising. Killing her kid, or turning herself in.

I was thinking it might have been a product of instant rage followed remorse. It seems that usually when we hear about women who've killed their kids, they've worked hard at hiding it.

PORTLAND, Ore. - An Oregon woman who prosecutors say threw her 6-year-old autistic son from a bridge in the coastal town of Newport and then called police to confess to the crime was charged on Tuesday with aggravated murder and manslaughter.
Jillian McCabe, 34, made an initial appearance in Lincoln County Circuit Court on Tuesday but did not enter a plea after her arraignment on the charges was postponed.
Authorities say McCabe called police around 6:25 p.m. local time on Monday to say she had tossed her son London from the Yaquina Bay Bridge. The U.S. Coast Guard sent two boats and a helicopter to help search for London before his body was spotted in the water near the Embarcadero Resort, about a mile from the bridge, by a diner about four hours later, police say.
A website previously set up by McCabe to seek financial aid, helpmatt.org, described her family as facing financial challenges following a brain injury that landed her husband, Matt, in the hospital for four months last year, and left him unemployed upon his release.
"With London's autism, the financial and emotional load of Matt not being there for month after month is more than most of us can understand," she wrote on the site.
"But not more than we could help with. Donations of time, child care, and money have all helped the McCabe family through this last year."
Newport is a town of about 10,000 about 115 miles southwest of Portland.

Usually, it's a murder/suicide, which makes the fact that she didn't kill herself surprising.

PORTLAND - An Oregon mother accused of killing her 6-year-old autistic son by throwing him from a bridge is being held on $1 million bail, a Lincoln County District Court clerk said on Wednesday.
Jillian McCabe, 34, was arrested on Monday night after calling emergency 911 to report she had thrown her son, London, from the 246-foot-high Yaquina Bay Bridge in the coastal Oregon town of Newport, about 115 miles southwest of Portland.
London McCabe's body was found four hours later after an extensive search by law enforcement and the U.S. Coast Guard.
His mother was charged on Tuesday with aggravated murder and manslaughter, but has not yet entered a plea, court officials said. Authorities have not given any clues as to a motive.
"The world is worse without London in it. We will all remember him," the McCabe family said in a statement on Wednesday asking for privacy.
"As a family they made it through so much. Now things have been broken that can't be put back together in this life," the family said in the statement, posted on a fundraising website McCabe established last year while her husband, Matt, was hospitalized for a brain injury.
The statement thanked supporters who donated time and money while Matt McCabe recovered from that injury, which has left him still unemployed more than a year later.
"But now that something so terrible has happened, all we can offer Matt is a shoulder to cry on, and peace and privacy to mourn," the family said.
Jillian McCabe's court-appointed defense attorneys did not return calls seeking comment Wednesday morning.
