A nurse in Italy is accused of killing up to 38 patients after an investigation into a rash of deaths that took place while she was on duty.
Daniela Poggiali, 42, of Lugo, was arrested on the weekend after the unexpected death of Rosa Calderoni, 78, who, it was learned, died after being injected with potassium, according to a Central European News report posted by news.com.au. In high doses potassium can cause a heart attack.
That death sparked the investigation which lead to Poggiali's arrest for murder and suspected of dozens more.
The New York Post reported that, according to the Corriere Bologna newspaper, Poggiali had a photo of herself on her cellphone giving the thumbs ups at the bedside of a patient who had just died.
There were also reports that Poggiali's co-workers said she was "cold" and that she would give laxatives to patients at the end of her work day so nurses on the following shift would have to work harder.
Several news sites reported that Poggiali killed patients because she found them of their relatives annoying.
