A British teen who was reportedly obsessed with the television show Dexter was jailed for 25 years for brutally stabbing and dismembering his girlfriend.
The Guardian reported that Steven Miles, 17, was sentenced Oct. 2 for killing Elizabeth Rose Thomas, 17, in Surrey.
Police say they discovered Thomas' body at the end of January, and determined the cause of death to be a stab wound to the back. Miles was arrested on suspicion of murder and pleaded guilty to the crime in September.
The teenage politics student used saws and tools from his father’s tree surgery business to cut up her body, which he covered in a plastic sheet, The Guardian said.
Various media reported that Miles had been diagnosed as having an autistic syndrome, and told his family he had an alter ego called Ed who Miles claims instructed him to carry out the murder.
This is not the first time the show, about a police blood-spatter expert who kills people in his spare time, has been linked to a real life crime.
Edmontonian Mark Twitchell was handed a life sentence with no chance of parole for 25 years on April 12, 2011, after being convicted of first-degree murder for the Oct. 10, 2008, dismemberment-slaying of Johnny Altinger, 38.
During his trial, a jury heard that Twitchell had a fascination with Dexter.

I doubt very much it's actually "linked" to this or any other crime. 5.7 million average viewers weekly, or thereabouts, we'd be seeing a lot more crime if a television program could actually be the cause....which it isn't.

I very much doubt that if Dexter the series had never been broadcast this individual would never have killed anyone. Unstable minds will that their "inspiration" where they can find it. It's only a matter of time.
