A 24-year U.S. Army officer was denied entry to his daughter’s high school because his uniform may “offend another student,” according to the school’s security.
After trying to escort his daughter into Rochester Adams High School in Rochester, Mich., Lieutenant Colonel Sherwood Baker was told by security that if he wanted to enter the school, he would have to go home and change out of his uniform.
“Before he was allowed in, the security guard stopped him and said ‘sorry, you’re not allowed in the school,’” Baker’s wife, Rachel Ferhadson, told My Fox Detroit. “Security told him men and women in uniform weren’t allowed because it may offend another student.”
The school’s superintendent, however, was quick to apologize to the family.
“The district has apologized for any perception that individuals in uniform are not welcome in the school,” Superintendent Robert Shaner, himself a veteran, wrote. “The district does not have a policy excluding individuals in uniform and will be working with administration and the firm that handles our security to make sure district policies are understood and communicated accurately.”
But the fact that the incident occurred in the first place is indicative of a trend to disrespect active current and former military in America.
Last month, a Department of Veterans Affairs training document compared veterans to Oscar the Grouch.
“The guide contained an 18-page slide show which compares disgruntled or disaffected Veterans to the grumpy garbage can dwelling green creature,” wrote Steve Watson. “According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, one slide in the presentation features the word “CRANKY” hanging from Oscar’s garbage can, while a second shows the character alongside the phrase ’100% GROUCHY, DEAL WITH IT.’”
Likewise, a few months prior, one VA supervisor asserted that older vets “should be taken outside and shot in the head because they’re worthless.”
And an Indiana Police Sergeant admitted that the militarization of local police departments is partly to deal with returning veterans who the government considers a “homegrown terror threat.”
“The weaponry is totally different now that it was in the beginning of my career, plus, you have a lot of people who are coming out of the military that have the ability and knowledge to build IEDs and to defeat law enforcement techniques,” Sgt. Dan Downing of the Morgan Co. Sheriff’s Department stated.
Let’s not also forget how the federal government treats illegal aliens better than veterans, with taxpayer-funded shelters, health care and airplane rides while homeless vets struggle on the streets.
