Islamist militia group says it has ‘secured’ a US Embassy compound in Libya’s capital

TRIPOLI, Libya – An Islamist-allied militia group “secured” a U.S. Embassy residential compound in Libya’s capital, more than a month after American personnel evacuated from the country over ongoing fighting, one of its commanders said Sunday.

An Associated Press journalist walked through the compound Sunday after the Dawn of Libya, an umbrella group for Islamist militias, invited onlookers inside. Some windows at the compound had been broken, but it appeared most of the equipment there remained untouched. The journalist saw treadmills, food, televisions and computers still inside.

A commander for the Dawn of Libya group, Moussa Abu-Zaqia, told the AP that his forces had entered and been in control of the compound since last week, a day after it has seized control of the capital and its strategic airport after weeks of fighting with a rival militia. Abu-Zaqia said the rival militia was in the compound before his troops took it over.

A video posted online showed men playing in a pool at the compound. In a message on Twitter, U.S. Ambassador to Libya Deborah Jones said the video appeared to have been shot in at the embassy’s residential annex.

She also said it appeared the compound was being “safeguarded” and was not “ransacked.”
The fighting prompted diplomats and thousands of Tripoli residents to flee. Dozens were killed in the fighting.

On July 26, U.S. diplomats evacuated to neighbouring Tunisia under a U.S. military escort. The State Department said embassy operations would be suspended until the security situation improved.

The Dawn of Libya militia is deployed around the capital and has called on foreign diplomats to return now that the fighting has subsided.

Libyan militia occupies US embassy in Tripoli to 'secure' it

The Dawn of Libya, an Islamist militia group, has said that it has secured the US embassy compound in the Libyan capital Tripoli, more than a month after US staff evacuated the building.

Although windows at the compound have been smashed, most of the equipment that had been left by the Americans remained untouched, according to an AP journalist who was invited by the militants to have a look around.

A commander of the militia group said that his forces have been in control of the former embassy since last week.

A poorly-filmed video has appeared on YouTube showing men, who may or may not be the Islamic militants, fooling around by the swimming pool, while some of them perform reckless dives from an upper balcony into the shallow pool.

Safira Deborah, the US Ambassador to Libya, said the video appeared to have been filmed in the residential annex of the embassy.

The US embassy was evacuated in July, as a last-minute ceasefire between warring militias collapsed and the capital fell into complete chaos.

The US embassy is located near the airport, which marked the frontline between two rebel groups. For weeks the staff sheltered in concrete bunkers while 90 heavily armed US Marines fended off any would-be attackers. However, the embassy did not take any direct hits.

The evacuation of the embassy in Tripoli was soon followed by EU embassies and brought back memories of the death of Chris Stevens, the last US ambassador to Libya who died along with three of his staff when the US consulate in the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi was overrun by militia two years ago.

Libya has descended deep into chaos since the overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. A student who joined the uprising against Gaddafi in 2011 told The Guardian: “This is not what I fought the revolution for. We fought for peace and instead we get this.”

U.S. Ambassador Claims Embassy Compound Being “Safeguarded” Not Ransacked (external - login to view)

Oh boy, is that what we are calling it now?

An Associated Press journalist walked through the compound Sunday after the Dawn of Libya, an umbrella group for Islamist militias, invited onlookers inside.

Windows at the compound had been broken, but it appeared most of the equipment there remained untouched.

A commander for the Dawn of Libya group said his forces had entered and been in control of the compound since last week.

Fox News as of late Sunday morning has not been able to independently confirm the group’s claim.

On Sept. 11, 2012, U.S. diplomat Christopher Stevens and three other Americans were killed in a terror attack on a U.S. outpost in Benghazi, Libya.

A video posted online showed men playing in a pool at the compound. In a message on Twitter, U.S. Ambassador to Libya Deborah Jones said the video appeared to have been shot in at the embassy’s residential annex.

The Dawn of Libya militia is deployed around the capital and has called on foreign diplomats to return now that the fighting has subsided.
The locals who have had to deal with a lot of the foreign Islamists are furious at her and the Obama regime, once again regarding them as in league with the Islamists. They even ask her if she is saying it is being “safeguarded”, is she in contact with the Islamist militia who took over the compound.

oh boy is right
