US corporations boycott Glasgow over Gaza support

Hundreds of US businesspeople have scrapped plans to visit Glasgow, following the Scottish city’s decision to fly the Palestinian flag following Israeli military operations in Gaza.

The visitors represented major US corporations such as Wal-Mart, ExxonMobil and Coca-Cola, and were due to visit the Glasgow as a reward for investing millions into its economy.

The delegation of 600 CEOs and business leaders was organized by the vice president of a leading Fortune 500 company, Richard Cassini.

However, following Glasgow City Council’s decision to fly the flag over its city chambers as a sign of solidarity with Gaza, Cassini wrote to Glasgow’s Lord Provost, Sadie Docherty, canceling the planned event.

“We were scheduling six days in Glasgow, three for business and three for leisure time,” Cassin wrote. “Having read your statement endorsing Hamas and its leadership due to the number of Muslims in your city, I have decided to cancel all plans for our trip. We are a Fortune 500 Company, so costs were really not a serious consideration, location was,” he said.

“Hopefully, the Muslim population that you so sincerely endorse will have the spending power of the very people you have chased away so well.”

While Glasgow City Council has acknowledged receiving the email, they have not responded “because of the volume” of emails relating to the council’s decision to fly the Palestinian flag.

“The council has received more than 1,500 emails/calls/online forms, etc, about the flag and is responding to each" of tem, a council spokeswoman said.

The council sparked controversy when it decided to raise the Palestinian flag in the wake of the ongoing conflict between Israel and Gaza, which began in July.

In a letter to the Mayor of Bethlehem, Israel, Docherty offered her “heartfelt sympathy” to the people of Gaza.

"Glasgow is home to many friends of Palestine and this is a deeply distressing time for them. They represent a variety of ethnicities, political persuasions, faiths and none. However, they are united by a common desire to support the Palestinian people,” she said.

The council’s decision was met with criticism from a number of Jewish representative groups, including the Glasgow Jewish Representative Council, who referred to the act as “the worst kind of gesture politics”.

It “does nothing to alleviate the suffering on either side of the conflict," they added.

Cassini insisted his decision to abandon the business leaders’ trip to Glasgow would not be reversed.

A little touchy don't ya think? Hamas is just a bunch of guys who get together
to play with bombs and rockets on the weekend. The Scots should consider
as part of their new countries immigration problem.

So much for George making 'the wrong speech'. Looks like one of the few places where independent thought exists, much to the disdain of the 'West'.

How nice of the Fortune 500 to give the global community a starting place to show those flags in high volume. Let's see who rules over who, people who have morality as their compass or corporations who have profits for their shareholders as their compass. US corporations such as Wal-Mart, ExxonMobil and Coca-Cola and whoever was on the list. Missing a celebration meal after the places are in operation is not a hardship on the people, they already got the big money, a few tourist dollars means nothing to the city as that will be made up many times over as people come to the city in support of their movement.

Scotland is just a socialist, Communist, anti-entrepreneurial, workshy hell-hole full of drunken, violent subsidy-junky-heart-attacks-waiting-to-happen living off English taxpayers' money who have a life expectancy lower than that in much of Africa. Let them fly the Palestinian flag (Palestine isn't even a country and never has been), not our problem. As long as we in England fly the St George's Flag rather than the EUSSR flag, the Rainbow flag, the Gaza flag and the ISIS flag, I'm happy.

Any teeth fall out in that 'speech'?
Still it was nice of the Fortune 500 to set themselves up as who the protesters should be targeting. Lets hope that catches on all across the UK.

Well, I certainly look to U.S. corporations for moral guidance.

Like the one that preferred killing at least 13 people to replacing a two-dollar part. Or the one that trashed the economy, took a trillion-dollar bailout, and paid its executives (the ones who trashed the economy) eight-figure bonuses.

I'm going to assume that is a list that could be expanded on.
What might be better is to understand why they would do those thing when it would hurt 'sales' if it ever got out and people reacted to the news. As far as I know it is to line the pockets of the shareholders who would prefer to not know how it was done but the checks better get bigger each time. I haven't seen anything that would move that to the #2 spot.

Ig big biz is involved how much of the Gaza conflict is about 'corporate profits' as a Gaza that was independent would be making deals like this instead of Israel

Israel Nears Gas Sales to Egypt as Mideast Unrest Flares - Bloomberg
The talks come as Israel resumes air strikes on Gaza after Hamas, which the U.S. and the European Union classify as a terrorist group, fired rockets following a breakdown in Egypt’s efforts to broker a cease-fire. The move is all the more improbable because Egypt -- little more than a year ago -- was under the sway of the Muslim Brotherhood, which had begun to steer the country away from viewing Israel as a trading partner.
Noble Energy Inc. (NBL) and units of Israel’s Delek Group Ltd. (DLEKG) plan to deliver as much as 6.25 trillion cubic feet of gas from the Tamar and Leviathan offshore fields to LNG facilities in Egypt’s Damietta port and the coastal town of Idku.

If Palestine ever got to the ICC it's possession of most of the offshore resources would go to them and once the upper line was 'made right' Lebanon would be 'in the money; so perhaps the war against the defenseless is a war that is not about the safety of the people it is about lining the pockets of corporate entities like the ones involved in this gas deal. I wonder if this was even up for discussion, no yet Egypt is playing the 'helping hand', what a bucnh of bull.

Well you don't bite the hand that feeds you.. relevancy .

You're living in a town that's economy thrives of the Big Corporate give away..

There is nothing wrong with good old capitalism. Unless you are saying you're anti-Capitalist?
I'm saying capitalism is not a moral system. It's an economic system. I understand how that confuses you.

Well, if you don't understand, go belligerent. Works for ol' Rush.

I'm sure that's relevant to whatever the voices in your head are telling you. Relevant to what I said? Not so much.

Okay, T-Bones.. time out, group hug. I'm not trying to be belligerent.

...and no I didn't get what you first said, and agree with you.. 110%.

I'm not looking for an argument or to sling insults... just chill'in today.

an economic system which caters to the immoral and greedy.
Yeah. Too bad the Soviet bloc, with an allegedly different economic system, fell to immorality and greed. To which it did not cater. At least in your mind.

Allow me to be crystal clear. Capitalism has significant problems, both theoretical and in application. But if you just want to shout slogans, I don't have much time for you. Right-wing sloganeering and left-wing sloganeering are equally banal. And equally interesting.

It's all immorality and greed. There is/was a famous saying. "Capitalism is man screwing man. With communism, it is the opposite" (not exact quote).

Pretty much.

My favourite old Soviet joke: At one of the early international conferences on AIDS, a Soviet government "scientist" was touting the glories of the Soviet system. To a sceptical American, he said "I vill give you example. In America, AIDS is incurable."

The American scientist said "Of course. Same in the USSR."

"Nyet!" said the Soviet. "Soviet AIDS is invincible!"
