Environment Canada confirms tornado touched down in New Tecumseth, Ont.

Environment Canada has confirmed that a tornado touched down in New Tecumseth, Ont., on Tuesday, downing hydro lines and trees in the southern Ontario community.

The national weather agency said the twister struck in the 15th Side Road and 4th Line area at around 3:30 p.m.

"A cluster of strong to severe thunderstorms developed ahead of a cold front. A tornado has been confirmed from this event," Environment Canada said in a statement on Tuesday.

A survey team has been sent to investigate the tornado. A preliminary investigation suggests the EF1 twister had a path length of at least 10-kilometres long and hit wind speeds of between 135 to 175 km/h.

No injuries have been reported. The violent storm came as many surrounding communities were under severe thunderstorm warnings. All of the warnings have since been lifted.

OPP said at least one home was severely damaged during the storm. An image of the residence -- located near Highways 9 and 27 -- shows roof shingles that have been ripped off and a garage that appears to have caved in. OPP said there have been no reports of injuries.

Tuesday's tornado comes days after another one hit Angus, Ont., last Tuesday. More than 100 homes were affected and three people suffered minor injuries.

Must be climate change because that part of ON has never had a tornado before.
