Thames threatens thousands in UK

Water overflowing from the River Thames floods a house at Wraysbury, England, on February 10, 2014.The River Thames has breached its banks after reaching its highest point in years, flooding areas upstream of London and putting thousands of people at risk.

Residents and soldiers from the army stacked sandbags to shield properties from the swollen river, but it burst their defenses in several places on Monday and wreaked havoc.
Residents in a village said that the scenes are from a "horror movie".
The Environment Agency has issued 14 severe flood warnings, which means there is a danger to life.
Environment Agency chief Paul Leinster said that "extreme weather will continue to threaten communities this week", with water levels of the Thames expected to keep rising for the next 24 hours.
The government of British Prime Minister David Cameron has been under attack for failing to dredge rivers and take other essential measures to prevent flooding.
Cameron, who is touring flood-hit southwest England, denied the government had been slow to respond.
"We have been dealing with it from the very moment it started," he said. "Where money was needed, we provided more money. Where military was needed, I made sure the military was deployed."
England has seen its wettest January since 1766 and thousands of homes have been flooded, with several areas, such as the low-lying Somerset Levels in the southwest, remaining submerged for over a month.

UK govt. flooding management deplored

An old British woman gets caught up in flooding in Old Windsor, Berkshire, February 10, 2014.The UK coalition government is facing mounting criticism for failing to do enough to prevent flooding, which has crippled parts of the country since almost two months ago.

The government’s response to the crisis was described as “very disorganized” by angry residents of English Thameside village of Datchet in Berkshire, who woke on Tuesday morning to witness their houses surrounded by water.
As water levels on the River Thames continued to rise, local people said they were waiting for the government to offer some help at least, but to no avail.
Frustrated residents in the southwest slammed the government authorities for failing to react quickly enough to help those affected by the devastation. Instead, volunteers are seen giving hand to people to come out of the water coming from the swollen River Thames.

The floods first hit southwest England around seven weeks ago, but they are now creeping eastwards towards London with several homes and businesses inundated.
Prime Minister David Cameron has visited the West Country in an attempt to personally oversee tackling the flooding, which has plunged the government into a bout of ministerial infighting over the handling of the situation.
On Monday, dramatic scenes could be seen in the commuter belt to the west of London with parts of towns such as Staines, Windsor and Datchet submerged by flooding from the River Thames.
This is while with more rain forecast, hundreds more homes face flooding and rail lines are set to suffer widespread disruption in affected areas.
All these come as the country’s Environment Agency has had to endure “massive” cuts to its budget since the Cameron government came to power.
Chris Smith, the agency’s chairman, said on Monday that he had warned the cabinet at the time that the budget cuts would undermine the agency’s ability to defend the country against flooding.

Backwater, Ontario.
That poor lady looks cold as well as wet. But, she's just a person after all, and sooner or later the water will go down. Nothing to see here folks. Move along.

A failure to dredge the river is a British political fault, not a partisan one.

After sorting out the Warmist, I think it's time to return to sanity.

The Thames Valley floods, and those which have devastated Somerset as a result of the Parrett bursting its banks, are as a result of a lack of dredging.

The National Rivers Authority used to regularly dredge rivers to prevent flooding, but since it became the Environment Agency in 1996 it has largely abandoned dredging.

And now the people of Somerset and the Thames Valley are reaping the consequences.

So the Isles are flooded every winter then? And rail lines washed out too I suppose,

Flooding wasn't commonplace when we dredged our rivers to prevent it happening.

Nice try, though.

In fact, what has not been mentioned is that the Somerset Levels are SUPPOSED to be flooded. The area - which is flat and below sea level - is flooded every year as it's a natural catchment area for the River Parrett. The area used to be known as Summerlands as it was always too wet to use in winter. All that's happening now is that idiots are building homes on the catchment area.

Somebody needs to tell this to the Warmists before they start implementing dangerous green policies which will ruin people's lives.

In fact their dangerous policies are already ruining lives. It is the fact that money is being diverted from flood defences to pointless "green" technology like windmills that is one reason why flooding is more common.

And here's one more thing the Warmists should be shown:

"The oldest man living does not remember such great floods and so much water. Everything beyond Bridgwater is like a sea."
A Somerset man, 1809

Yeah. It's called winter. I hope you realise it's February.

It's winter? It's February??? Sheesh, this has been going on for weeks now and that is all you have to say? Where are the pages and pages of pictures and text in endless detail?

Yep.

Sheesh, this has been going on for weeks now

Winter lasts for months.

And another winter storm is set to hit the country later on with the Met Office warning of 100mph winds and a risk to life. Western Wales and north west England to be hardest hit.

But don't worry. It'll soon be spring and it'll all be over.

Just get some common sense and remember that this is Britain - the most northerly EUSSR country - in February.

Wind speeds have reached 100mph down in County Cork.

The storm - which I think is called Charlie - is set to hit the north west of England, where I am, later and the Met Office is warning people to stay indoors.

The West Country is also particularly windy. Sky News is coming live from Lyme Regis on Dorset's Jurassic Coast and the waves there are huge.

This could be like the Great Storm of 1987.

Weather expert from the Met Office on Sky News just now was asked if this terrible weather was caused by "climate change."

Her response was something like: "There is no evidence that this is climate change. Climate change would be global so you can't blame this localised weather on climate change."

And yet the non-weather expert MPs in the Commons were all too eager to blame it all on "climate change" earlier on, with Cameron getting out his crystal ball and saying that there will be "more such 'extreme weather events' to come in the future."

Yet the weather experts at the Met Office are saying there is no evidence that this is linked to "climate change."

This is proof, if any were needed, that politicians' talk of "climate change" is just lies, and just an excuse to tax us through "green" taxes.

Even now there is a numpty MP on Sky News blaming it on "climate change", just minutes after the Met Office woman said there is no evidence for that.

Somebody should sit these idiotic MPs in front of that recording of that Met Office woman saying you cannot link this weather to climate change. They are out of touch with reality.

Met Office have just reported winds of 110mph on a ship on the Irish Coast.

I'm going to assume there is more to the wake than the rather stout British lady. Is the wake the reason she looks rather pissed or is it the flood altogether?

They should be as lucky as Venice and have the water freeze.

It is a money issue, so much is funded in that direction and that is that. If they are intentionally telling people the wrong thing so they freeze to death then they need to be put at the front of the line, if it is an honest mistake they need to be fired for being poor at their job.

If global warming is looking unlikely then you should get a realistic forecast of what weather changes will actually take place. The common fear tactic is to only look for bad points. It works out that the more ice there is at the poles the lower the oceans levels are. The biggest fear-mongering is we will lost crop growing regions when the truth could be that the desert regions of the world will shrink, drastically and overall growing areas in the world will increase by 20% and the border between frost and not frost might be better defined so some crops could be planted almost to the area that gets a lot of snow. The American Southwest could be growing two crops a year with no irrigation needed although the rivers will be full should that be desired. That would be around the world and not just in North America. Rather than Britain being able to grow their own grapes for wine they better switch to hard stuff (again) so it doesn't freeze, or move to what is now a desert and wait until you can farm it.

One myth beloved of the Warmists is that all melting ice causes sea levels to rise. But that's not the case. All ice on the sea - which is the majority of the Arctic ice - does not cause sea levels to rise as its total meltwater equals the amount of sea that that solid ice displaces.
If all the Arctic melted it would have negligible effect on sea levels.

Of course the Arctic ice isn't melting. It's growing. And tests have shown that sea levels aren't rising.

The Warmists just ignore all this.
