A 6-day-old baby reported missing from his bassinet in southern Wisconsin has been found alive and well after being dumped in a bag alongside a frozen Iowa highway, police said on Friday.
The baby was reported missing by his mother early Thursday morning, sparking a massive search that included federal and local officials. He was found Friday morning in a tote bag, said Steven Kopp, police chief for the town of Beloit, Wisconsin.
Kayden Powell was found swaddled in blankets outside a gas station near Interstate 80 by the police chief in West Branch, Iowa, Kopp said.
"Despite frigid temperatures, Kayden was found alive and appears to be doing very well," Kopp told a news conference. "In the words of EMS officials, he is in excellent health."
Kayden's mother, Brianna Marshall, 18, and his father Bruce Powell, 23, have been notified of the news and the efforts now center on reuniting the family, Kopp said.
The town of Beloit borders the city of Beloit in southern Wisconsin near the border with Illinois.
