Even though you felt this important enough to post the story twice in one thread, (thanks for not starting another thread on the same subject), I saw this story Sunday afternoon and looked up his pic. He looks vaguely familiar but I would have not matched the face with the name for the Million Dollar prize......

I guess that's what happens when you don't watch TV or go to general movies. You get out of the loop on all the important stuff.

But I had heard of Max though I couldn't name a movie he was in either...........

Austrian-born actor Maximilian Schell (external - login to view) dies at a hospital in Innsbruck, Austria ...

its not that I felt that this was important. I just felt bad that someone who was talented died for nothing.

Hopefully his children weren't negatively influenced by his drug use.

They may have video of the drug transaction from a bank security cam... that killer heroin is a risk to addicts..

I'm sure we will hear more tragic stories as this heroin becomes more available to the public.

and so many whine and moan about making sure athletes are tested for drugs consistently. if hollywood
and much of the entertainment world had to do drug testing, there wouldn't be many left to entertain
us, as they probably can't entertain till they are full of narcotics.

its a joke, and we are suppose to look up to them, admire them, and put millions of our dollars into
being entertained by them, give me a break.

all we will hear now is 'poor' phillip, he was such a good guy, but we won't hear the criticizm of
the lifestyle, why.

why is it any different than performance enhancing drugs in the sports world, makes them perform better,
well, apparantly that is what many drugs do for entertainers, yet we cherish and admire them, again, why.

not I folks, not I, and i don't admire the sports cheaters either.

thats it, i'm off to the shower, finished my rant, have a good day.

Hoffman had more range that any other actor on screen today.. as much as any in the history of film imho.

A man with an 'everyman' face and physique.. he could play a literary dandy (Capote.. for which he won the Academy Award).. or a tormented porn industry hang around (Boogie Nights).. or a cold as ice arch villain (Mission Impossible 3).. with complete and often gripping authenticity.

It's a puzzle to me that such a gifted talent, who won acclaim and all the creature comforts that fame offers, could not find fulfillment outside the sharp end of a needle (like many others).

RIP, Philip.

Unfortumately its not how these things usually work.. addiction draws in everyone in close range.

Owning Mahoney was one of his best movies. RIP.

Owning Mahoney certainly displayed Hoffman's ability to play non-descript, alienated and unsympathetic parts to powerful effect, delving deep into the psyche of the character with a perfect amount of understatement and draw an unexpectedly compassionate response from the viewer.

I'm sure he's building up a Kieth Richards style tolerance. He'll outlive us all.

Keith Richards probably doesnt have much of a tolerance. He's been sober since the 80s. I guess he did enough in the 60s and 70s to guarantee him a druggie reputation for life. The guy has lost enough friends and seen enough people die from drugs. He cleaned himself up - granted he still looks like he has been dead for awhile. He can still play really well though.

So did Jefferson. Several others were alcoholics. JFK was usually on a few dozen drugs which no doubt did a number on him.

If people want to do it they should be able to. Their bodies, their lives.

.

I guess you havent been paying attention. Since he died there have been quite a few articles and comments sections filled with people criticizing him for what he did, yourself included. That happens every time a well known person dies from a drug overdose accidental or not. For some reason you and some others seem to forget that or just not notice.

As for performance enhancing drugs - if people want to do them - go for it. They are available to anyone in sports who wants them and they all know the risks involved. I dont see that as cheating as anyone can do it if they want to. Sure, the people who use the drugs may win more - but they may also drop dead leading to the sober ones winning in the end. What athletes and celebrities chose to do with their bodies is their business, not yours or mine.

sure, lets all just 'do it' and contribute and help all the drug dealers make more and more money,
and continue to pollute and kill those who can't think for themselves, and enable more and more
people to be addicts, and encourage those who want to perform better, (just do it), no penalties,
and the rest of us can sit back and watch the world go down the toilet, its half way there now
anyway, so why not, what the hell, who cares.

none of the wars we worried about were near as harmfull as the war on drugs, impossible to win.
