Two trapped and dozens injured after bus crashes in London

Two people are thought to be trapped and around 23 people injured after a double decker bus crashed in Kennington, central London.

Of those injured, two are thought to be in a critical condition.

The bus was heading to King's Cross when it crashed into a tree near the Ship pub on Kennington Road, near to the south bank of the Thames, in Kennington in the London Borough of Lambeth.

Transport for London's director for buses, Mike Weston, said the bus "swerved to avoid another vehicle and struck a tree" at about 10:50 GMT.

About a dozen people have been injured, two of them critically, in a bus crash in south London.

Two passengers are believed to be trapped on the double decker bus in Kennington, London Fire Brigade said.

The front of the number 59, which was heading to King's Cross, was crumpled against a tree near the Ship pub on Kennington Road.

Fire crews, paramedics, the air ambulance and officers from the Metropolitan Police are at the scene.

Two people, including a 19-year-old woman, are in a critical condition, Metropolitan Police traffic sergeant Richard Sutton confirmed.

He said two other people were also seriously injured and two off-duty police officers were hurt, one with a suspected broken arm.

In total, the Met said there were 23 "walking wounded" and there are currently no fatalities.

London Ambulance Service tweeted that it was treating more than a dozen patients.

Transport for London's director for buses, Mike Weston, said the bus "swerved to avoid another vehicle and struck a tree" at about 10:50 GMT.

He said: "Our first concern is, of course, for the driver, passengers and others involved in this incident and we can confirm the emergency services are in attendance.

"There will be a thorough investigation into this incident as a matter of urgency."

A spokesman for the London Fire Brigade said: "Firefighters are attending a double decker bus that's crashed into a tree on Kennington Road, Kennington.

"Around a dozen people are believed to have been injured and firefighters are working to release two people who are believed to be trapped.

"Four fire engines are on the scene from Soho, Westminster, and Lambeth fire stations.

"London Ambulance Service, the air ambulance, and the Metropolitan police are also at the scene."

Its been an entertaining week in London, eh! Roofs collapsing, buses crashing - the gawkers are having a field day.
