GUELPH—The University of Guelph is working to comfort and counsel the campus community following a student's webcam-captured online suicide attempt over the weekend.
A statement from the university said a fire was deliberately set in a residence room in Dundas Hall, East Residence, on Saturday night. The incident is under police investigation.
The fire was first reported at 7:40 p.m. and emergency services arrived on scene shortly after.
A 20-year-old male student was taken to Guelph General Hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Two campus police officers were also taken to hospital and treated for smoke inhalation.
On Saturday night, the student arranged to broadcast his actions on a webcam to an audience of 200 viewers on 4chan, an anonymous online chat site.
