Elizabeth May "shocked" by latest revelation about Harper government and Enbridge

Linda Solomon Wood
Vancouver Observer

Really? Feds plans to drop $100 M on Enbridge infrastructure before the pipeline's been approved?

That's what Elizabeth May and Andrew Weaver, said this morning in a press conference, citing Environment Canada documents they said show that the Harper government is spending more than $100 million on infrastructure to support the proposed Enbridge pipeline, before it's even been approved.

“Documents obtained from Environment Canada and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans reveal that at a time when core science is being cut across the Government of Canada, tax dollars are being spent to do Enbridge’s homework for them,” said Andrew Weaver, the Green Party MLA from Victoria.

The Federal Government is moving forward over the next two years with a $100 million plus, ‘Complementary Measures Project’ (now called ‘World Class’) to research and model the complex waterways in the Kitimat and Hecate Strait region....

Ellymay is shocked that we still have an economy despite the best efforts of her and her merry band of freeloading ecoweenies.

Wouldn't the taxpayer dropping $100 mil on behalf of Enbridge be freeloading?

It doesn't really say where the money is being spent though. It's not just Enbridge, it's an entire suite of reosurce extraction industries inclduing oil sands, LNG and mining. That requires substantial infrastructure uprades. For instance, if even a few of the mines proposed go through, they will effectively use all the power produced by the proposed Site C dam. There's also hevay investment in Prince Rupert Harbour and Vancouver Harbour--federal assets. There's a Highway 37 power corridor in the works too. It's all about exporting energy to China, not just Enbridge.

Called investment in the future. Good governments do this. Aside from the royalties mines and oil wells pay they provide good paying jobs to people that then donate 50% or more of this back into government coffers. When the socialists spend money on social programs for people that are too lazy to do for themselves they do zero to create jobs or revenue.

"Good governments do this" is more of a value judgment than a statement of fact. Liberals would argue that investments in social programs are better. Conservatives prefer subsidies to the private sector, and liberatarians would just rather the government stick to governing.

No it is a fact. The name isn't all that important. BC has a liberal government that is very pro business. Saskatuwan had an NDP government that understood the reality. It is socialists that prefer social programs. They would very much like us to end up like Greece.

Well, there are many examples of governments that are overly beholden to corporate interests, and do not invest enough in social programs that fail as well. Batista's Cuba comes to mind.

Point taken though.
