Whose decision should it be?

From what I can understand the future of the disgraced senators lies at least partly with other senators. Isn't this a bit like having prisoners deciding whether one of their fellow inmates gets parole? Wouldn't it be more proper to hold a referendum so that the victims of these miscreants can make the decision? Or do I have the scenario all wrong?

I keep hearing on the radio that removing their medical benefits would be cruel as they have medical issues. Shouldn't supposedly intelligent people think of these things before they start stealing? The whining is becoming almost unbearable!

This is one of the problems that exist when you have an appointed body of Government. The Senate should be elected, just as the Members of Parliament are. Elect them for a fixed term, and limit them to no more than 2 terms. Eight years would make a good term.

Senators are chosen by the PM BECAUSE they are highly reliable and predictable.. as proven over a political lifetime. There are something like 60 Conservative Senators to 38 Liberal and others. To hand a major political defeat and embarrasment to Harper (by not suspending Duffy, Wallin and Brazeau) just before the Party Convention is not something that is going to happen. A few will balk but enough will follow the party line.

The Seate was conceived to be a sober second thought that was the first flaw.
These people are made up a partisan politicians thought is not the issue loyalty
to party is the issue.
The Liberals started to stack the Senate with a few hacks to push bill through.
Harper has turned putting people of suspect quality in the Senate into an art form.
Remember these folks were put into those positions personally by the Pime Minister.
What they are desperately trying to keep out of the public eye and off the record
is the fact these particular people of high profile were campaigning for the party
during the election.
The fact is at first Harper saw nothing wrong with the expenses until you and I got
ticked. He at first didn't take seriously Bev Oda who would,.
The Senate should be shut down
A couple of fun facts for you here the Senate cost Canadians 92 million dollars
the average work time per Senator was less than 90 days. We complain 'cause
those damn union people are making too much money. Mind you there is the cost
of operating a useless patronage institution, but we could do a lot of useful things
with 92 million dollars couldn't we. The other problem is how much will it cost to
get rid of the buggers we have to open the constitution and talk about Quebec for
a decade before we address the issue. that is the other side.
Maybe its just cheaper to get some honest people in there who want to work.
Oh one other consideration while we argue pro and con here not one NDP member
of that chamber, and the NDP is all for getting rid of the senate

Yep, the whole kit and caboodle are useless, including Federal Gov't., Provincial Gov't., Municipal Gov't., Reg. Dist. Gov't. and the Unions which are just another level of bureaucracy that adds to the price of products. One thing for sure we ain't getting rid of them as long as we vote for them. And assassination isn't really an option.
